    The European Union will use existing courts to investigate war crimes carried out in Ukraine, the European commissioner for justice, Didier Reynders, and the Czech minister of justice, Pavel Blazek, said after a meeting of EU justice ministers in Prague on Tuesday. The two officials said the agreement of other powers would be required for the establishment of a special tribunal to look at war crimes in Ukraine, which has been under assault by Russia since February.

    Mr. Reynders said national courts and the European Court of Justice in the Hague could be used to handle any war crimes cases.

    Czechia currently holds the revolving presidency of the EU.

    July 22 will see demolition work begin at a former pig farm at Lety in South Bohemia that was the site of a concentration camp for Romanies during World War II. The news was announced on Tuesday by the Museum of Romany Culture, which is planning to build a memorial to the Holocaust of Romanies and Sinti in the Czech Lands.

    The Czech state purchased the pig farm in 2018 following years of discussion on the subject.

    Former Czech prime minister Andrej Babiš personally created the conditions under which the company behind the Stork’s Nest conference centre near Prague outwardly appeared to meet the criteria for a CZK 50 million EU subsidy, the Czech News Agency reported on Tuesday, citing the indictment against Mr. Babiš.

    The ANO leader and billionaire businessman is due to face trial over the alleged subsidy fraud in September. If found guilty Mr. Babiš could get a jail term of up to 12 years. He denies any wrongdoing.

    Czech woman Eliška Junková has been inducted in memoriam into the Hall of Fame of the Fédération International des Véhicules Anciens, the worldwide association of historic cars. She was nominated for the honour by the Czech Auto Club.

    In her day Eliška Junková was one of the best racing drivers in the world, enjoying great success with Bugatti cars in the mid-1920s. She died in 1994 at the age of 93.

    An 1890s merry-go-round at Prague’s Letná has been reopened after a 16-year renovation job. The carousel, which is administered by the nearby National Technical Museum, is one of the oldest of its kind in Europe. When it closed for renovation it had been in operation for over a century.

    The restoration of the merry-go-round cost CZK 23 million.

    Unemployment in Czechia fell by one-tenth of a percentage point to 3.1 percent, in June, according to official data published on Tuesday. Unemployment in June last year was at 3.7 percent.

    Last month 231,309 people were out of work, just over 4,000 fewer than in May. The number of unfilled positions is nearly 320,000.

    Some 2,031 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in Czechia on Monday. It was the first time over 2,000 cases were recorded on one day since April, and the tally was over one-third higher than seven days previously.

    The number of people hospitalised with the coronavirus rose to over 300 on Monday, but the number of critical cases remained steady.

    A European Union support hub will be set up in the Moldovan capital Chișinău, bringing together security experts from EU countries to fight organized crime, EU interior ministers agreed at an informal meeting in Prague on Monday. The launch of the EU support hub reflects the EUs commitment to draw Moldova into the democratic fold of nations following the decision of the European Council to grant the country EU candidate status. Its aim is to strengthen Moldova's internal security and border protection. Over a dozen EU member states want to join the support hub which will tackle illegal arms trafficking, illegal migration, people smuggling, cybercrime and drug trafficking.

    The United States will provide $10.2 million to organizations in Czechia that support Ukrainians who have fled the war in their homeland. The amount is part of a roughly $368 million  humanitarian aid package announced last week by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the U.S. Embassy in Prague said in a press release. According to the US Embassy's chargé d'affaires, Michael Dodman, the money is intended to express US solidarity with the Czech Republic and the people of Ukraine. "The Czech Republic continues to show initiative, courage and empathy through its support for Ukraine and Ukrainians fleeing the Russian aggression," he said. The money will be used to support the activities of the United Nations Children's Fund, the International Organization for Migration, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Health Organization in Czechia.
