The ongoing summer wave of coronavirus cases is nearing a culmination point which should occur within a week or 10 days, the director of the Institute of Health Information and Statistics of the Czech Republic (ÚZIS), Ladislav Dušek, told Czech Radio on Thursday. The decrease in cases will be gradual and case numbers could continue to rise after the culmination point is reached, he said.

According to Jan Konvalinka from the Institute of Water and Environmental Technology, the current viral load present in the population is the largest seen yet. However, this is tempered thanks to a substantial level of the population being vaccinated as well as thanks to the factor of herd immunity.

Covid tests have detected on average around 2,000 cases a day over the past three days.

Yevhen Perebiinis, who was recalled from his position as Ambassador to the Czech Republic by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky last week, has praised the solidarity of Czechs with Ukraine after Russia’s invasion of the country in February. Speaking to Czech Television, the ambassador said that he will never forget the large numbers of people who turned up to protest the invasion and the amount of financial support that Czech citizens sent to the embassy account for funding Ukraine’s Armed Forces.

He said that his main goal as ambassador when he arrived in Prague was to change how Czechs perceive Ukrainians and that, due to the war, he believes some progress has been made in this area. “I hope that Czechs don’t just see Ukrainians as hard working, but also as a brave people now,” the ambassador said, adding that Ukraine is not just a country of workers and cleaners but also of painters, doctors and university professors.

The ambassador said that it is normal for diplomats to rotate and that he was not surprised by president Zelensky’s decision to recall him. It has not yet been announced who will replace him.

According to the head of the Association of Regions of the Czech Republic, Governor Martin Kuba, 40,000 of the estimated 70,000 Ukrainian refugee children that are in Czechia have been registered in the country’s schools.

Interest among Ukrainian refugees for registering their children into the Czech education system is therefore smaller than the government had expected, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said after a meeting with regional governors on Thursday. However, he said that this numerical discrepancy could also mean that the children in question are either no longer on Czech territory.

The European Commission’s summer macroeconomic forecast has raised its prediction for Czech economic growth this year from 1.9 percent to 2.3 percent, with the average rate of inflation expected to lie at 13.9 percent – the fourth highest in the EU after the Baltic states. The reason behind the improved estimate is the surprising level of productivity of Czech industry during the first quarter of 2022, which was less impacted by a lack of commodities than was expected.

Meanwhile, for next year, the forecast has lowered its expectations when it comes to the growth of the Czech economy. The country is now expected to grow by 1.5 percent instead of 2.3 percent in 2023. Inflation is expected to fall to 5.8 percent.

The European Union is preparing a seventh package of sanctions against Russia, but it is already clear that it will not curb imports of Russian gas as too many member states would be unable to  adjust quickly enough, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala told Reuters. Fiala said the sanctions now being finalized would target more individuals, effect a ban on gold imports and broaden the list of dual-use goods banned for export to Russia. The European Commission should be ready to present the package in the coming days and member states could approve it immediately after, Fiala said in an interview.
