    Czech archaeologists have unearthed and documented the tomb of an ancient Egyptian dignitary in Abusir, Egypt, the Czech Institute of Egyptology at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University announced  on Friday. The discovery was reportedly made in the spring of this year, but was only announced now by the Czech and Egyptian authorities. The tomb apparently dates back to the early 5th century BC and belonged to a dignitary named Vahibre. According to Miroslav Bárta, who heads the Czech expedition to Abusir, a double sarcophagus, partially damaged by robbers, was discovered at the bottom of a tomb shaft.

    Laboratories in Czechia registered 2,295 new cases of coronavirus on Friday, the most since April of this year. Covid numbers have risen steeply in the past few weeks and experts say a summer wave of the coronavirus pandemic should peak at the end of July. No restrictions have been imposed and the Health Ministry says it is not planning any in the immediate future since the number of people hospitalized with Covid is not too high and there are only about a dozen people in need of intensive care. People who test positive should self-isolate for seven days, however taking a test is not compulsory. Booster shots against Covid will be available as of next Monday.

    Deputy chair of the Chamber of Deputies and a prominent member of the opposition ANO party, Karel Havlíček, has slammed the government’s aid package to companies and households as “too little, too late”. The aid plan which is to help overcome the energy crisis and soaring energy costs, was approved by the lower chamber on Friday. The government plans to allocate CZK 30.6 billion to be distributed among end users. Mr. Havlíček said the aid package is six months overdue, since other countries introduced similar measures in the spring, overly complicated and fails to motivate people to save energy.

    The interest rate on new mortgages rose to 5.0 percent in June from 4.64 percent in May, according to statistics from the Czech Banking Association Hypomonitor. The rate is now at its highest since mid-2010. Banks granted mortgage loans worth CZK 19.3 billion in June, down eight per cent from May. The year-on-year fall accelerated to 65 per cent.

    War veteran Josef Kaufman, who fought on the Eastern Front in World War II, has died. After joining the ranks of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps in 1944, he fought in the battles at Machnówka and Dukla, suffering serious injuries.  After the war, Kaufman settled in Czechoslovakia where he worked in the agricultural sector until his retirement. Kaufman, who was born in Volyn in what is now Ukraine, was 95 years old.

    The Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs wants disabled people to get more financial support from the state. Social Affairs Minister Marian Jurečka said that in view of the soaring inflation and rising energy costs, he would push for the mobility allowance and other forms of support to be increased within an upcoming package of measures being debated by the cabinet. The aim of the upcoming package is to provide targeted support to disadvantaged citizens and the minister stressed that disabled people are one of the groups most vulnerable to price rises.

    A new elite police unit has been created to fight terrorism and cybercrime. The unit, officially established on Friday is expected to be fully operational by early 2023. It should employ about 150 elite detectives and officers and will be based in Prague's Zbraslav district. According to Deputy Police President Tomáš Kubík, the new unit should ensure better protection against terrorism and cybercrime.

    The state will start offering coronavirus vaccine booster shots as of Monday next week, Health Minister Vlastimil Válek told the Czech News Agency on Friday. The shot will be available to anyone over the age of 18, who last had a Covid shot at least four months ago. The vaccines will be available at vaccination sites without the need to register and later on also in GPs offices. The reservation system for vaccinations will be activated in mid-August. Doctors are recommending that people over 60 and those with chronic diseases get the shot.

    Ivana Trump, the Czechoslovak born businesswoman and ex-wife of former US President Donald Trump, has died at the age of 73, the website of ABC News reported on Thursday, citing the Trump family as the source. Mrs Trump passed away at her home in New York City, Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that she was a “wonderful, beautiful, and amazing woman, who led a great and inspirational life”.

    According to ABC correspondent Aaron Katersky: “Ivana Trump was found unconscious and unresponsive at the bottom of a set of stairs in her apartment.  The police are investigating whether she fell and, if so, whether the fall contributed in any way to her death”.

    Born Ivana Zelníčková in the Moravian city of Zlín in 1949, Ivana Trump was considered an accomplished skier in her early life and was the first wife of Donald Trump. The two were prominent figures in New York society throughout the 1980s. They had three children: Donald Jr., Ivanka and Erik Trump.

    After divorcing her husband in 1992, Ivana Trump wrote several books and took part in a wide range of business ventures.
