The opposition has criticized the proposal of Labour Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Marian Jurečka to introduce progressive taxation, following comments he made in an interview with the daily newspaper Právo published on Saturday, in which he said he wants to propose the introduction of a temporary solidarity tax for high-income taxpayers.

In CNN Prima News' Partie plus programme on Sunday, vice-chairman of the ANO party Radek Vondráček said this would mean going back on the Together coalition's election promise not to raise taxes, and that in his opinion, Prime Minister Petr Fiala should have spoken out after Jurečka's statement to reject the tax increase. The Freedom and Direct Democracy party chairman Tomio Okamura said his party rejects the idea of tax increases for Czech citizens and companies, and the introduction of progressive taxation was also rejected by deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Jan Skopeček. He noted that there is no mention of raising taxes in the government's program statement and that people with above-average incomes already pay higher taxes. He added that the problem with Czech public finances lies with expenditure, not with income.

According to the Ministry of Health, Czechia will receive 2,800 monkeypox vaccines purchased by the European Commission from the common budget, meaning the state will not have to pay for them. The EC purchased a total of 110,000 doses, with member states due to receive a proportional share according to their population size. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health told Czech Radio that Czechia does not deem an active vaccination campaign necessary; rather the vaccines are being requested primarily for at-risk individuals and in case of a sudden worsening of the epidemiological situation.

So far, 11 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in Czechia, with three new cases being registered in the past week. Monkeypox has also been confirmed in other European countries, some of which have already recorded over 1,000 cases. The most common symptoms are a rash accompanied by fever, fatigue, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhoea, chills, sore throat or a headache.

Ukraine has confirmed that its air force uses Mi-24 combat helicopters donated to them by Czechia. A photo of one of the helicopters was published on Twitter by the Ukrainian Strategic Communications Center Stratcom, which combats disinformation and other external threats. There have been speculations about the delivery of helicopters for several months, but Czechia has so far declined to release any other details about the aid to Kyiv.

Czechia was one of the first countries to provide Ukraine with military aid after the Russian invasion. According to Defence Minister Jana Černochová, by the end of May, the Czech government had already provided Ukraine with military material worth more than CZK 3.5 billion, with further deliveries worth CZK 600 to 700 million to follow.

People with higher incomes should pay more tax, especially in times of crisis, says Labour and Social Affairs Minister Marian Jurečka in an interview with the daily newspaper Právo published on Saturday. Mr. Jurečka, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, wants to propose the introduction of a temporary solidarity tax for high-income taxpayers, lasting for a period of between two to four years. The specific level of taxation has not yet been stated.

He said in the interview that additional resources for the state budget are needed due to financial measures to assist lower-income households with energy prices. In his opinion, the rich should contribute more as a gesture of solidarity to help those who are suffering under the current cost of living crisis.

However, not everyone agrees with him. The president of government coalition partner TOP 09, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, wrote on Twitter on Saturday that she does not agree with the proposal to raise taxes for higher-income earners. The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Jan Skopeček, also spoke out against the idea.

Covid seems to be on the rise again in Czechia, according to the latest Ministry of Health data. On Friday, 1,840 new cases were registered, the highest number of new daily cases since the end of April. Apart from the public holidays on Tuesday and Wednesday, when the number of newly registered cases fell significantly due to lower testing, last week the number of daily new cases continued its recent upward trend.

Data from Prague's wastewater also show that the virus is making a comeback. Biochemist Jan Konvalinka pointed out this week on Facebook that there has been a sharp increase in the amount of the virus found in Prague's wastewater, and that in the past, similar figures were followed about four weeks later by full hospitals. The Ministry of Health is appealing to people to get revaccinated.

There are 49 Czechs in Sri Lanka who have used the system of voluntary registration for Czech citizens travelling abroad (DROZD), according to the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and most of them are staying in resorts away from the riots. The island nation has seen massive protests in recent days against the country's worst economic crisis in seven decades, as it has struggled to pay for imports of fuel, food and medicine, and people face rising inflation and power outages.

The Ministry has sent Czech citizens staying in Sri Lanka a warning about the current situation and strongly recommends avoiding the demonstrations. Travel to Sri Lanka is still subject to an earlier warning from the ministry related to the country's economic crisis. So far no Czech citizens have contacted the embassy in Delhi, which is closely monitoring the situation.

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his residence in Colombo on Saturday minutes before thousands of angry protesters stormed the building demanding his resignation. At least 34 people were injured in the clashes.
