The integrated steel company Liberty Ostrava signed a contract worth 8.6 billion crowns on Friday with the Italian company Danieli, a global manufacturer of machines and industrial equipment, agreeing that the Italian firm will supply them with two hybrid electric arc furnaces, due to be put into operation in 2025. The new furnaces, the first of their kind in Europe, are considered essential for the future of metalworking and will have an annual production capacity of 3.5 million tons of steel. They will replace the four current tandem furnaces, which were built in the 1970s.

The modernization of the steelworks will be the largest investment in the modern history of the Ostrava-based company. It will enable it to continue to operate for decades to come, and to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 80 percent by 2027, making it a crucial step towards becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Dutch Ambassador to the Czech Republic Daan Huisinga stated on Twitter on Thursday that Czechia’s lease of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals in the Netherlands should cover up to a third of the country’s annual gas consumption – equivalent to roughly 3 billion cubic metres of gas. This, he says, will help reduce Czechia’s dependency on Russian gas.

The LNG terminals will be moored off the Dutch coast from the autumn, according to news site Deníkn.cz.

34 percent of Czech companies that use gas in their business operations are not able to run without this resource, according to a survey conducted as part of the Index of business expectations (Index očekávání firem) project, which is organised by one of the largest Czech commercial banks ČSOB. A further 4 percent of respondents said that they would also not be able to operate, but have the necessary gas reserves. A halt to gas deliveries could therefore lead to serious problems for the Czech economy, the survey claims.

Around 40 percent of small and medium business enterprises use gas in some way in their activities. Meanwhile, 55 percent of businesses with revenues exceeding CZK 40 million are reliant on gas, according to the survey. A quarter of respondents said that they would be able to tackle an end to gas deliveries with slight technology and processing tweaks. 37 percent said that a loss of access to the supply would necessitate major investments.

The survey was conducted among 400 companies and entrepreneurs.

Interest in state rooftop solar power subsidies is growing, with the Czech Environment Ministry already having registered more applications this year than for the entire year of 2021, Environment Minister Anna Hubáčková said on Thursday. Thus far, 34,544 applications for funding, worth a total of CZK 6.7 billion, have been registered by the ministry in 2022.

It is expected that demand will exceed the government allocated CZK 10 billion budget for the relevant Nová zelená úsporám (New green for savings) funding programme. However, the ministry is prepared to allocate more funds to the programme from its modernisation fund, the Czech News Agency reports.

The European Parliament voted on Wednesday to reject a proposal not to designate nuclear energy and gas as transitional and clean sources in the EU’s taxonomy for sustainable activities. The result of the vote was welcomed by Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, who tweeted that this was “excellent news” both for Czechia and for Europe as a whole. According to Czechia’s head of government, the vote “opens the way to energy self-sufficiency which is absolutely crucial for the future”. Czechia currently holds the EU presidency and has named EU energy security as one of its key targets during its six month term.

The taxonomy for sustainable activities is a classification system established by the European Commission which aims to prevent so-called greenwashing and to encourage investors to opt for greener energy choices.
