New information has been revealed about a joint team of Czech and British police officers who have connected the explosions in two munitions warehouses in Vrbětice, Czechia in 2014, in which two people were killed, and the poisoning of former Russian-British double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yuliya in Salisbury, England in 2018. Both cases have been linked to the Russian secret service, and Czech criminal investigators suspect that the same men are responsible for both the 2014 explosion and the attempted murder by poisoning.

The joint team was formed in February of this year to exchange information about suspects, but the National Centre for Combatting Organised Crime only released information about it on their website on Thursday. According to a spokesperson, the information could not be made public earlier.

Police have announced that the gun which was used in the shooting in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm in the south-east of the Czech Republic was a legally-held private weapon and not a service weapon. Police were called on Wednesday to a family home in the town after a 49-year-old man shot his 35-year-old girlfriend and their two small children and then turned the gun on himself. The crime was reported to the police by family members who found the bodies of the parents and two girls, who were four and six years old. Both adults worked as police officers, the Czech News Agency reports.

This is not the first multiple murder in the Vsetín region this year. At the end of April, in the nearby village of Loučka, a 31-year-old man killed his wife and three young children under the age of five in their family home. In June, the man was charged with murder and sent to prison.

The conduct of the police in connection with former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš's visit to Český Krumlov on Thursday is being investigated after a video was released on the Forum 24 website in which two plainclothes policemen were shown taking a woman away to an unmarked car, following a physical attack by the woman on one of the officers. The procedure and tactics of the police officers will be checked by the police's internal control office to dispel any doubts, the police announced on Twitter.

Mr Babiš is currently travelling around Czechia in a camper van to visit voters, but denies that it is a presidential election campaign, saying that he is acting as the chairman of the ANO party in connection with the senate and municipal elections. According to media reports, Babiš faced loud protests from his opponents in Český Krumlov and nearby Frymburk on Thursday, as well as on Tuesday in Třebon. Mr Babiš previously stated at the end of June that he will most likely announce his decision on November 4 regarding whether or not he will stand as a presidential candidate.

Rent prices in Czechia are continuing to rise, the Czech News Agency reported on Thursday. Countrywide they rose by an average of 11 percent year-on-year, with Prague seeing the biggest increase at 15.6 percent, according to analyses by the internet portal Realitymix.cz and the development companies Trigema, Skanska Reality and Central Group. Rent prices have now exceeded the pre-pandemic levels of 2019 and further growth is expected.

The average rental price per square metre increased in all Czech cities with the exception of Ústí nad Labem, Realitymix.cz reported. In Prague, according to Trigema, Skanska Reality and Central Group, the average price is CZK 360 crowns per m2 and the average cost of short-term rent is CZK 28,500 per month.

The reason for rising prices is, among other things, a reduction in the supply of available apartments. Real estate with an area of more than 70m2 is in especially short supply in cities. According to data from GarantovanyNajem.cz, there are currently 1,960 apartments available for rent in the capital, while last year there were 4,300 available.

Fuel prices in Czechia have fallen again since last week. Natural 95 gasoline is now selling for an average of CZK 44.41 per litre, CZK 1.41 less than a week ago, while the price of diesel has dropped by CZK 1.10 to an average of CZK 45.11 per litre, according to data from the company CCS, which monitors fuel prices. The cheapest fuel can be found at petrol stations in the Pardubice region, while it is the most expensive in Prague.

Despite the drop in prices, fuels are still significantly more expensive than a year ago, by CZK 10.63 per litre for petrol and CZK 13.46 per litre for diesel. Fuel prices rose sharply at the end of February when Russia launched its war on Ukraine, and have been fluctuating since then. Petrol started to become a little cheaper after the record highs it reached at the end of June, and the price of diesel has been decreasing since the beginning of July.

The government has instigated several measures to try to mitigate the rise in fuel prices. Among other things, from the beginning of June, VAT on gasoline and diesel fuel was reduced by CZK 1.50 per litre for four months. The cabinet is considering keeping the reduced tax on diesel permanently, to remain competitive with neighbouring countries.

Firefighters in Bohemian Switzerland are still fighting a large-scale fire in the national park, including at the famous Pravčická brána site. There were new fire outbreaks at some locations in the park on Wednesday. Drones equipped with a thermal camera are being used to determine the current situation and find out where the firefighters will be needed due to the new outbreaks. The situation is being made difficult by the current high temperatures of up to 36 degrees, meaning firefighters have to swap in for each other often.

The area affected by the fire has shrunk to an estimated 450 hectares, down from the original 1,000 hectares. About 1,000 firefighters are still on the scene. Residents of Hřensko, Mezná and Mezní Louka, all of which have been evacuated, are still waiting to return home.

The response to major forest fires in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park in North Bohemia over the last week and a half will likely cost hundreds of millions of crowns, the Czech News Agency said.

The head of the Czech national fire service, Vladimír Vlček, said on Wednesday that the cost of deploying fire brigades alone was around CZK 20 million a day. Around 1,000 fire officers have helped to fight the blaze, which has been attributed to human carelessness.

At one point smoke from the unprecedented wildfire could be smelled over large parts of Czechia, including Prague.
