    Czech tennis player Marie Bouzková has reached the final of tennis’s Prague Open. The 24-year-old overcame her compatriot Linda Nosková 7-6 6-3 in Saturday’s all-Czech semi-final.

    Bouzková will now face Russian player Anastasia Potapova in the first WTA final of her career on Sunday.

    A Czech senator is proposing that the right to pay by cash be enshrined in the country’s constitution. Jitka Chalánková, who is from the Civic Democrats and TOP 09 group in the Senate, says that some people are afraid that non-cash payments will become compulsory or that the authorities will use pressure to get rid of cash transactions.

    The upper house should begin discussing the draft bill the week after next, the Czech News Agency reported.

    Documentary maker Olga Malířová Špátová is preparing a film about veteran Czech rock star Petr Janda and his group Olympic. The feature length documentary should be released at the end of next year and will be named Django, referencing the musician’s nickname.

    The film is being made in connection with the 60th anniversary of the foundation of Olympic. Petr Janda recently turned 80.

    The Czech power giant ČEZ has begun its departure from the Turkish market. On Friday the semi-state company signed a deal to sell its 50-percent stake in the firm Akcez, though the transaction must still be approved by the Turkish authorities.

    In a statement, ČEZ said the move was part of a strategy of divesting from certain markets and focusing on renewable resources and modern power services.

    Around 700 fire officers are now dealing with a fire that broke out last weekend in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park in North Bohemia. Some 240 fire fighters from around Czechia have been deployed to join the hundreds already in place throughout the week. Five planes and eight helicopters are also being used to combat the fire, which has been contained to a certain area in the national park.

    At one point smoke from the fire could be smelled in Prague and other parts of Czechia. Officials say human carelessness appears the most likely cause.

    Czech tennis player Linda Nosková has advanced to the semi-finals of the Livesport Prague Open tournament. The 17-year-old Czech player defeated Japan’s Nao Hibino, who was forced to withdraw in the third set due to back injury.

    Nosková, who won the Roland Garros junior girls’ singles title last year, will next face the winner of the match between Marie Bouzková and Russia’s Oksana Selekhmetyeva.

    Czechia received CZK 23.5 billion more from the EU budget than it paid in dues in the first half of 2022, with CZK 7.7 billion coming from the NextGeneration EU recovery plan, according to a Czech Finance Ministry report released on Friday. Excluding the NGEU funds, the country’s net position amounted to CZK 15.8 billion.

    Czechia is one of many EU member states that has been receiving more from the EU budget than it contributes. In the first half of 2022, the country received the equivalent of CZK 48.4 billion from the EU budget while contributing 32.5 billion. Since joining the EU in 2004, Czechia has already received over CZK 1,000 billion.

    Czechia is set to receive nearly 900 million crowns from the EU funds for fighting cybercrime and other criminal activities, the Interior Ministry spokeswoman Klara Dlubalová said on Friday.

    The Czech programme, which has been approved by the EC, also aims to enhance international police cooperation and updating of the EU information and communication systems.

    According to the programme, Czechia will focus on improving the use of public sources with the aim to raise the effectivity of uncovering criminal activities such as cybercrime, terrorism and extremism, as well as financial crime and organised crime.

    In 2021, Czech police registered 153,233 criminal offences, which is a drop of seven percent on the previous year. On the contrary, the number of cyber-crime cases increased by nearly 1,500 to 9,518.

    The 92nd edition of the amateur theatre festival Jiráskův Hronov (Jirásek’s Hronov) gets underway in the Northeast Bohemian town on Friday.

    The event, which is said to be one of Europe’s oldest theatre festivals, is named after the novelist Alois Jirásek, an important representative of Czech National revival, who was born in the town.

    The programme of the week-long festival includes 37 theatrical productions from Czechia and abroad, including experimental, student and puppet shows.
