State company Povodí Labe has increased the flow of water in the Labe River below the Střekov waterworks in Ústí nad Labem due to the fire in the Czech Switzerland National Park in the Děčín region.

The aim is to increase the water level in the river near the state border to make it easier for the firefighting helicopters to scoop water from the Labe, also known as the Elbe.

Last week, Czech authorities started to release more water from its dam system on the Vltava River in order to improve the water levels on the Labe.

Firefighters have brought a forest fire at the Bohemian Switzerland National Park in North Bohemia under control and it is no longer spreading. The area where the fire continues to burn has been reduced to 600 hectares, the head of the national fire service, Vladimír Vlček, said on Monday evening that his officers should be able to complete their work in the coming days. He said that it was not yet possible for locals to return to their homes in a number of villages in the area.

The fire has been one of the most extensive of its kind seen in Czechia and smoke from it could be smelled in many parts of the country.

Human carelessness is considered the most likely cause.

Former Czech prime minister Andrej Babiš would take the most votes in the first round of voting for a new president next January, suggests a new Median poll. The ANO leader, who has not yet declared, would receive 25.5 percent of the vote, the survey indicates, ahead of former Czech Army officer and NATO official Petr Pavel with 21 percent.

A poll by Median at the start of June gave Mr. Babiš a nine-point lead over Mr. Pavel.

The new survey puts unions chief Josef Středula in third in the first round, with 7.5 percent.

Only the first two candidates from the first round make into the second round run-off.
