In the early hours of Sunday morning, firefighters were called to an eleven-story apartment building in the town of Beroun, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) southwest of Prague. One person died and 77 people had to be evacuated. The damage from the fire is so far estimated at six million crowns but the total will probably end up being higher, a spokesperson for the Central Bohemian Fire Department told the Czech News Agency.

The Czech army and Defence Ministry will start negotiating with the Israeli government in the coming days about the purchase of three medium combat drones costing CZK 1.5 billion, news site Novinky.cz reported on Sunday. The drones have a span of around 15 metres and can carry weapons such as rockets or bombs. The army would like to get the first machine as early as next year, and according to Novinky, the delivery of all the machines and the training of personnel should take place by 2026 at the latest.

Firefighters could completely extinguish the fire in the Bohemian Switzerland national park by the end of next week, fire brigade spokesperson Martin Kavka told the Czech News Agency on Sunday. A more precise handover date and a preliminary schedule for reducing the number of firefighters deployed in the park will most likely be announced on Monday.
The sectors to the south of the Kamenice river, possibly even the gorges, could be handed over to the national park administration during the week, even earlier than Friday, August 12, which was the previously mentioned date. However, Mr. Kavka emphasised that the handover does not mean that the public will be able to enter these areas immediately.

Saturday was the first day since the start of the Russian invasion in February that Czechia did not grant any temporary protection visas to refugees from Ukraine, the Czech News Agency reported. The Czech authorities have issued almost 404,000 temporary protection visas to Ukrainian citizens so far.

As of Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recorded 50 deaths of Czech citizens abroad since the official start of the tourist season. Last year, 105 Czech citizens did not return alive from foreign trips in the summer holiday season between June 15 and September 15. In 2020, the number was only 60, reflecting the covid-related travel restrictions that were in place at the time. With the return to foreign travel, the number of deaths occurring abroad has risen back to pre-pandemic levels, the foreign ministry's press department told the Czech News Agency.
Just last week, a Czech tourist was found dead on a boat off the Italian island of Elba. At the end of July, police found the bodies of a pair of missing Czechs from Žďár nad Sázavou on Mount Barre des Écrins in the French Alps. Two Czechs also died in the glacier slide on Mount Marmolada in the Italian Dolomites at the beginning of July.

Some 660,849 foreigners were living legally in Czechia at the end of last year, making up over six percent of the total population for the first time, according to a government report on migration and integration of foreigners. Over the past three years, the number of registered foreigners in the country has increased by 100,000 people.
Slovaks continued to predominate among foreigners from EU countries, while two-thirds of foreigners with a residence permit were from countries outside the EU, mostly Ukraine, Vietnam and Russia. According to the report, the increase in the number of foreigners was mainly due to economic migration, with the state issuing 185,000 short-term visas for the purposes of employment alone.
After a decline the year before, the number of people who applied for international protection in Czechia last year increased by a fifth to 1,411 people. Ukrainians, Georgians and Afghans were the nationalities representing the biggest share of applicants.

The international credit rating agency Moody's Investors Service has lowered the outlook for the Czech Republic from stable to negative due to a possible disruption of Russian gas supplies. In a press release, the rating agency wrote that the high dependence of Czechia on Russian gas, in combination with limited scope to move away from it in the near term, means that a disruption in supplies could lead to gas rationing and plunge the country into a deep economic recession. However, Moody's still confirmed the credit reliability assessment of Czechia at grade Aa3.
Russia has significantly reduced gas supplies to the European Union in recent weeks and has already completely cut supplies to some EU member states.

Firefighters should be able to hand two sectors in the southern portion of Bohemian Switzerland back to the management of the national park on Friday, August 12, a spokesman for the fire department told the Czech News Agency on Saturday. The fires in these areas have already been put out. However, he declined to speculate on when the fire as a whole would be extinguished.
Around a thousand firefighters are still deployed in the region, now covering an area of fewer than 400 hectares. The forest fire in the park has been burning for 14 days.

The cold front which advanced from Friday night into Saturday morning, bringing with it rain and strong winds, did not significantly help the firefighters in the Bohemian Switzerland national park, the Czech News Agency reported. Several firefighting units had to withdraw overnight due to the risk of falling trees caused by the wind, and furthermore, the wind fanned the flames, causing several new large outbreaks, which firefighters have nevertheless now managed to extinguish.
Although the cold front was accompanied by rain, it was not heavy enough to help the firefighters very much, though it did assist with some of the smaller fires, a fire brigade spokesman told the Czech News Agency. Firefighters have now been battling the fire for two weeks.
