Prime Minister Petr Fiala says the behaviour of the opposition parties during a no-confidence debate will benefit the parties in government in Senate and municipal elections in three weeks’ time.

Mr. Fiala said the opposition had displayed incompetence, hatred, lies and malice during the session and that this had been visible to all citizens, thanking them for this “favour”.

Opposition leader Andrej Babiš of ANO attacked the government during lengthy remarks during the debate and also made comments about one minister’s private life.

The Union of Czech Towns and Municipalities say rising energy prices will force them to limit investments and reduce regular operations unless the government produces a plan for managing the crisis.

Speaking on Friday, representatives of the group said most town halls had fixed energy prices under contracts that run until the end of this year and do not know what will come in 2023.

They said that in the worst scenario they would have to close kindergarten and elementary schools, limit services and reduce transport operations.

A debate surrounding a vote of confidence in the five-party coalition government of Prime Minister Petr Fiala has carried on all through Thursday night and is due to continue on Friday.

The vote was called by the opposition ANO and Freedom and Direct Democracy MPs over the appointment of Petr Mlejnek as head of civilian intelligence service, despite his connections to an influential businessman Michael Redl suspected of being involved in a political corruption case.

The government has 108 mandates in the 200-seat Chamber of Deputies, which makes the outcome of the vote a foregone conclusion. The vote was called last week and Mr. Mlejnek has since resigned from the post.
