    The head of Tibet’s exile government, Penpa Tsering, met with representatives of the Czech Senate in Prague on Tuesday, the Czech News Agency reports. Deputy Senate Speaker Jiří Oberfalzer said after the event that the main point of discussion was the possibility of creating an EU representative for questions related to Chinese occupied Tibet.

    Talks between the senators and the Tibetan Sikyong also touched on a planned conference on Tibet that should be organised during Czechia’s EU presidency.

    A private service in honour of singer Hana Zagorová, who died at the age of 75 last week, was held in a Prague church on Tuesday afternoon, attended by the signer’s close friends and family, the Czech News Agency reports. The event was organised by Zagorová’s widower Štefan Margita.

    Members of the wider public will be able to attend a goodbye event on Wednesday in Prague’s Kalich Theatre from 11am to 5pm.

    Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský met with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba on Tuesday, shortly ahead of the start of the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Prague. Mr Lipavský stated on Twitter after the meeting that Czechia will continue to support Ukraine in her defence against Russia.

    The Czech foreign minister also said that he had received the Order of Merit from Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyj, adding that he felt that it was an award for Czech diplomacy in general and its efforts to support Ukraine.

    The former councillor of Prague City Hall Petr Hlubuček, who is currently facing charges of being involved in corruption within the city’s Public Transit Company, will most probably be released from prison this Tuesday, news site Novinky.cz reports. In order to be released, the defendant had to pay bail, the news site writes. He will however continue to be prosecuted.

    Prosecutor Adam Borgula did not offer comment after being contacted by Novinky.cz, nor did Mr Hlubuček’s legal representative.

    Czech Radio reported earlier on Tuesday that the accused former councillor has transferred all of the properties he owns in Czechia into the ownership of his partner.

    News site Seznam Zprávy reports that the former member of the Prague Public Transit company’s board, Matej Augustín, who also stands accused in the corruption case, was released from prison on Monday.

    The chief of the Czech general staff, Karel Řehka, has officially visited Ukraine where he met with the commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, news site DenikN.cz reported on Tuesday. The Czech delegation was acquainted with details regarding Ukraine’s military operations in defence against Russia as well as the situation in Eastern Europe in general, a Ukrainian General Staff post on its Facebook page informs.

    Major General Řehka also visited the sites of war crimes allegedly committed by the Russian side during the ongoing conflict and several cities that have played an important role in Ukraine’s resistance, Ukraine’s General Staff announced.

    The Czech economy grew year-on-year by 3.7 percent in the second quarter of 2022 and by 0.5 percent when compared to the previous quarter, the Czech Statistics Agency reported on Tuesday. While the numbers are slightly more positive than statisticians initially predicted last month, they nevertheless warned that year-on-year comparisons should be considered with the fact in mind that last year was affected by lockdowns.

    Gross domestic product grew by 3.4 percent year-on-year, mainly thanks to the transport, housing, hospitality and sales sectors. Statistician Vladimír Kermiet said that domestic consumption fell by 0.2 percent when compared with the previous quarter.

    The Czech school system is well prepared for absorbing the new cohort of Ukrainian refugees and the quality of teaching to Czech students will not suffer from it, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said on Tuesday after meeting with Education Minister Vladimír Balaš.

    The ministry is currently preparing a campaign that will seek to boost interest among Ukrainian refugee children to study at Czech high schools. Thus far the number of Ukrainian children registered for the upcoming school year has been significantly lower than was estimated based off the number of refugees that arrived in the country.

    EU defence ministers have agreed on the need to organise a training mission for Ukrainian soldiers, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said on Tuesday after of an informal meeting of EU defence ministers in Prague. Mr Borrell said that the EU is united in its support for Ukraine, which will continue for as long as it takes, Czech Television reports.

    According to the head of EU diplomacy, the next step in the process of organising the training mission will be agreeing on its goals and how to finance it. Speaking ahead of the meeting Slovak Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said that his country will offer to train Ukrainian soldiers on its territory.

    The defence ministers arrived in the Czech capital on Monday for an informal event at the Ball Games Hall of Prague Castle. The topics of the two-day discussions included Russia’s war on Ukraine, the consequences of the conflict and aid to Ukraine, as well as the future of EU exercises in Mali.

    EU foreign ministers, who are currently attending an informal meeting in Prague, will look for a compromise solution to the question of whether to enact a visa ban for Russian tourists, Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský said on Tuesday. The Czech head of diplomacy stressed that maintaining EU unity was key.

    The Czech News Agency reported that agreement seemed to be closest on suspending a measure easing visa acquisition for Russians. If approved, the ban could be put in place sometime around October, the news agency reports. The EU has already halted the part of the agreement from 2007 which deals with government officials and businessmen.

    Czechia, which is hosting the informal meeting, is in favour of a ban on Russian visas. However, Reuters reports that Germany and France are not.

    The first day of the informal summit is taking place at Prague’s Congress Centre this Tuesday. Discussion is expected to focus on Russia’s war on Ukraine as well as the EU’s relations with Africa. On Wednesday the foreign ministers of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia will have an informal lunch with their EU counterparts.
