    Minister of Industry and Trade Jozef Síkela has approved a loan for Daniel Křetinský’s energy company EPH, and Sev.en Energy group, owned by Pavel Tykač, with the aim is to increase their liquidity to cover the deposits needed for stock exchange trading.

    The minister made the announcement on a debate programme on Czech Television on Sunday. However, he didn’t specify the amount of the loan.

    Earlier this year, the government approved a loan of EU three billion (over CZK 74 billion) for the semi-state energy company ČEZ.

    The number of newly confirmed Covid-19 cases in Czechia dropped week-on-week on Saturday after increasing for six days, according to the Ministry of Health data. Laboratories recorded 378 new cases on the first day of the weekend, which was 62 fewer than on the same day a week ago.

    There were 567 people hospitalized with Covid, which is the lowest number in nearly seven weeks. The seven-day incidence rate has been stagnating for five days in a row at 102 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The highest number of infected is in the Hradec Králové region, where it stands at 119.

    Czech tennis player Petra Kvitová has advanced to the fourth round of the US Open for the seventh time in her career after saving two match points to beat Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 on Saturday. The 32-year old Czech seed No. 21 will next face Jessica Pegula of the US.

    Another Czech player to advance to US Open round of 16 is Karolína Plíšková, who defeated Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 5-7, 6-4, 6-3

    The Czech duo Linda Nosková and Lucie Hradecká, who defeated Serena and Venus Williams in the first round of the women’s doubles competition, were knocked out in the second round by Alexa Guarachi of Chile and Andreja Klepac of Slovenia.

    Seventeen people, mostly children, have been injured after a chair swing carousel collapsed at a funfair in Havířov, North Moravia on Saturday.

    The structure with seats rode up the central column to a height of about 15 metres. Just as it was about to descend, the top section with the arms and seats broke off.

    According to the police, most of the people suffered leg fractures after falling from a height of around 15 metres. The cause of the accident is being investigated.

    The Czech women’s ice hockey team suffered a 1-10 defeat against the US in the semifinals of the World Championship in Herning. The Americans decided the game in the first period, when they scored six goals. The Czechs will next face either Switzerland or Canada in the bronze medal match.

    Czechia’s Jiří Prskavec has clinched his third overall title in the men’s K1 event with a victory at the Canoe Slalom World Cup Final in Spain’s Seu d’Urgell on Saturday. Prskavec’s teammate Vít Přindiš took the bronze.

    For the season, Prskavec ended with 317 points, ahead of Přindiš with 252. In the women’s event, Czech Tereza Fišerová ended in the K1 semifinals, finishing third in the overall rankings.

    The European Union will invite the future Prime Minister of the United Kingdom to the informal EU summit to be held in Prague in October, European Council President Charles Michel told The Guardian newspaper on Saturday.

    The summit, due to take place at Prague Castle on October 6-7, will focus on broader cooperation between the European Union and non-member states within the European Political Community project.

    The meeting will take place immediately after the British Conservative Party Congress, scheduled for October 2-5, when the name of the new Conservative leader will already be known According to polls, Liz Truss is widely expected to succeed Boris Johnson as the United Kingdom’s next prime minister.

    Around 800 Harley-Davidson enthusiasts took part in the tenth annual Biker’s Parade through the centre of Prague on Saturday. The ride was part of the annual Prague Harley Days, taking place at the city’s Výstaviště exhibition grounds until Sunday.

    The two-day gathering of Harley owners and fans, which is expected to attract thousands of people, includes side events such as an exhibition of Harley veterans, demo-rides and concert.

    Some 70,000 people gathered on Prague Wenceslas Square on Saturday to protest against the Czech government and its foreign and economic policies.

    The rally, called "Czechia First", was organised by several far-right and fringe political groups, including the Communist Party and the Freedom and Direct Democracy Party.

    The organizers called for the resignation of the ruling coalition, led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala, and demanded military neutrality as well as ensuring of direct contracts with gas suppliers, including Russia.

    According to Prime Minister Petr Fiala, the protest was called by pro-Russian forces that are against the interests of the Czech Republic.
