Czech Prime Minsiter Petr Fiala and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz agreed in Prague on Monday that a Europe-wide solution to the issue of energy prices had to be found. The two leaders were speaking to the media following a two-hour meeting.

Mr. Scholz said that present electricity prices were unjust because the cost of production was not so high, adding that structural change was needed.

Mr. Fiala reiterated that Czechia wished to be involved in the development of a European energy infrastructure and to acquire capacity in natural gas terminals that Germany plans to build.

The Czech minister of industry and trade, Jozef Síkela, said on Monday that Europe must separate gas prices from electricity prices. Speaking ahead of a meeting of EU energy ministers that he has convened for September 9, Mr. Síkela said they would discuss setting a cap on prices of gas, which is used to produce electricity.

The minister said this would be a functional and relatively affordable method of reining in electricity prices.

Mr. Síkela said there would be a need for greater fluidity in the energy market and for market interventions, which states could make in cooperation with energy traders.
