A male foal of the critically endangered maneless zebra has been born at the Liberec Zoo, offering hope for the fragile European breeding population. The subspecies is among Africa’s rarest hoofed animals, surviving in the wild only in Uganda’s Kidepo Valley National Park and the Pian Upe reserve. Fewer than 50 individuals are currently kept in human care worldwide. Liberec Zoo has bred the species since 2006, with ten foals born so far. The newborn, already visible to visitors, appears healthy and is being cared for by an experienced 22-year-old mother.

The Military Intelligence of the Czech Republic took part in a major international operation in March targeting hackers linked to Russia’s military intelligence, the GRU. The operation, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, focused on the cyber-espionage group APT28. Czech officers intervened by securing compromised devices and adjusting parts of the infrastructure exploited by hackers to collect sensitive military and state data. According to officials, such networks had been used against targets in Czechia and allied countries in NATO and the EU. The agency stressed that effective cyber defence requires disrupting entire networks at once, as advanced groups can quickly adapt. It also urged the public to improve basic cyber hygiene, warning that unsecured personal devices can serve as entry points for attacks on critical infrastructure.

Czech airports handled a record 19.25 million passengers last year, surpassing the pre-pandemic peak of 2019, according to preliminary Transport Ministry data. The figure marks a 7.9 percent increase year-on-year. International travel dominated, accounting for more than 19 million passangers, while domestic routes and transit made up only a small share.

The vast majority of passengers passed through Václav Havel Airport Prague, which handled over 17.75 million travellers, nearing its 2019 record. Regional airports also saw growth, including those in Brno, Ostrava and Pardubice. Cargo transport reached record levels as well, with Czech airports handling more than 126,000 tonnes of freight, reflecting a sharp increase compared to the previous year.

Czechia is marking International Roma Day with a series of events celebrating Roma culture and identity. The multi-day programme culminates in a gala evening at Prague’s Žofín palace, featuring concerts and the presentation of the Milena Hübschmannová Awards for contributions to the Romani language. Earlier in the day, President Petr Pavel is set to receive representatives of Roma communities. Universities across the country are also raising the Roma flag, while the Museum of Romani Culture is hosting guided tours and exhibitions. Organisers say the events aim to promote respect, visibility, and a more inclusive society.
