A Prague district court has rehabilitated 19 Czech dissidents, including underground figure Ivan Martin Jirous, Charter 77 spokesperson Radim Palouš and co-founder of the Committee for the Defence of the Unjustly Prosecuted (VONS) Dana Němcová, who were repeatedly imprisoned under the communist regime.
The Prague 1 District Court ruled on Monday that the "preventive" detentions—often carried out before public holidays, anniversaries of the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia or religious celebrations—were groundless. The ruling, issued 37 to 46 years after the events, also condemned the authorities' treatment of dissidents' families, lawyer Lubomír Müller told the Czech News Agency (ČTK).

Škoda Group, one of Europe's leading manufacturers of public transport vehicles, is preparing a new corporate identity after losing the right to use the Škoda name and winged-arrow logo.
The PPF-owned company must adopt a new name and logo by the end of June 2029, when its licence to use the Škoda brand expires. From July 2029, the iconic Škoda name and winged-arrow trademark will be reserved exclusively for vehicles produced by Volkswagen-owned Škoda Auto.
The agreement under which Škoda Group sold the trademark rights to Škoda Auto was announced by PPF in June 2022. Neither company disclosed the value of the transaction. At the time, PPF said the proceeds would mainly be used to reduce Škoda Group's debt and support its future growth. PPF acquired the Plzeň-based engineering company in 2018.

Tram services have been suspended across part of central Prague as the city's public transport operator (DPP) carries out track repairs in Spálená and Národní streets and on Vítězná Street near Újezd.
The disruption affects the section between the Újezd and Lazarská stops. No replacement bus service has been introduced, with passengers advised to use the metro instead. Drivers should also expect traffic restrictions, as only one direction remains open in most of the affected areas.
The works are scheduled to continue until Monday, August 10.

The Czech Army's Operations Command will hold a ceremonial change of guard in Prague on Wednesday.
Lieutenant General Václav Vlček will formally hand over command at Vítkov Hill to Major General Jaroslav Míka, who officially takes up the post at the beginning of August. Brigadier General Jan Štěpánek, the incoming deputy commander, will also be introduced during the ceremony.
As part of the event, JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets will conduct a ceremonial flyover of Prague at 11:30 a.m.

Deputy Prime Minister and Industry Minister Karel Havlíček signed a memorandum of understanding in the UK with energy company ČEZ and Rolls-Royce SMR to prepare additional sites for small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) in the Czech Republic.
The first SMR is planned to be built at the Temelín nuclear power plant in the late 2030s, while further locations are being considered in the Moravian-Silesian and Ústí regions, Havlíček said.
According to the Industry Ministry, SMRs are a key part of the Czech Republic's long-term energy strategy. They are expected to complement large nuclear reactors and renewable energy sources to ensure stable electricity generation.

President Petr Pavel has warned against undermining public confidence in the judiciary and the rule of law.
Speaking at a conference marking the publication of the European Commission's 2025 Rule of Law Report, Pavel said claims that courts are biased, politicized or activist weaken public trust in the legal system.
He stressed that the rule of law cannot be taken for granted and requires constant protection.
The government announced on Monday, that it had asked the Constitutional Court to reject or dismiss President Petr Pavel's competence complaint, which in views as an effort on the president’s part to broaden his constitutional powers.
It likewise sought the recusal of judge-rapporteur Pavel Šámal, arguing that his preliminary ruling, which was in the president's favour, amounted to unprecedented judicial activism and interfered with the government's constitutional powers.
A Constitutional Court spokesperson said on Tuesday that the Court would rule in September on the government's objection alleging bias against Šámal.

Police are carrying out an operation at Prague City Hall's offices in the Škoda Palace building, targeting the Department of Roads and Highways, according to the news website Novinky.cz.
The department's director, Aleš Krejča, is reportedly among four people being investigated. Police have detained two people, but no charges have been filed so far.
Prague police spokesman Jan Rybanský confirmed that detectives from the economic crime unit are conducting investigative procedures at the building. He declined to comment on the nature of the case or identify those involved.

A Czech woman has been hospitalised after being struck by lightning on a beach on the Croatian island of Krk, the Czech News Agency reported. The Czech Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that she is being treated at a hospital in Rijeka. It added that Czech diplomats in Croatia are in contact with the local police and the hospital.
Croatia is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Czech tourists. During the summer, the Czech Foreign Ministry strengthens its consular presence through temporary offices in Split and Rijeka to provide assistance to Czech citizens in emergencies. Czech police officers are also deployed to Croatia during the tourist season.
