Junior coalition partners the Social Democrats are in favour of the abolition of what is called the “super-gross wage”, chairman Jan Hamáček said on Tuesday. However, such a move would require the state finding increased revenues elsewhere and the Social Democrats may call for a bank tax. Coalition leaders ANO previously rejected that idea.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš of ANO has pushed for the ending of the super-gross wage and the reduction of personal income tax to 15 percent. However, Social Democrats leader Hamáček says this is unrealistic.

The super-gross wage is the sum of an employee’s gross salary, plus social and health insurance premiums. It has been the base for calculating employee income tax since 2008.

The Czech prime minister, Andrej Babiš, continues to have a decisive influence on companies in the Agrofert group, according to the substantiation of a decision made by the supreme state attorney, Pavel Zeman, the news site Neovliví.cz reported on Tuesday. Last month Mr. Zeman refused to file a suit against Mr. Babiš over alleged conflict of interest stemming from control of media outlets. However, in his legal explanation the supreme state attorney said that a ruling by the Central Bohemian Regional Authority that the prime minister was not in conflict of interest was incorrect.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution in June stating that the Czech PM was in conflict of interest. For his part Mr. Babiš says he placed Agrofert in trusts and no longer controls it.
