The Czech police have arrested a 19-year-old programmer from the Czech Republic, whom they suspect of creating and operating a large social network (atlayo.com) dealing with illegal drugs, Czech Television reported. The social network operated both in the Darknet environment and in the public area.
The site focused mainly on the Danish market, and in addition to illegal substances, it dealt with weapons and pornographic material. Over 450, 000 people are believed to have used it. The young man has been extradited to Denmark, where he will stand trial.

The Czech GDP fell by 10.7 percent year-on-year and by 8.4 percent compared to the previous quarter, the Czech Statistics Office reported on Friday. The drop, which is ascribed to restrictions stemming from the coronavirus pandemic, is the steepest economic decline in the country’s modern history.
Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said in response to the news that the drop was expected and the next results would be better. He said he was certain Czech companies and entrepreneurs would adapt to the circumstances caused by pandemic.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is due to visit the Czech Republic on August 11 and 12, Lidovky.cz reported on Thursday.
According to the website, Mr. Pompeo is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Andrej Babiš in Prague. The two politicians are expected to discuss the security of 5G mobile networks.
Last May, the US Secretary of State and the head of the Czech government approved a joint declaration committing to find reliable, trustworthy suppliers for 5G mobile networks.
Mr. Pompeo's visit, which hasn’t been confirmed by Czech officials, is also expected to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of West Bohemia by US troops in May 1945.
According to lidovky.cz, the US Secretary of State is also due to visit Austria, Slovenia and Poland in August.

The 90th edition of the amateur theatre festival Jiráskův Hronov (Jirásek’s Hronov) gets underway in the Northeast Bohemian town on Friday.
The event, which is said to be one of Europe’s oldest theatre festivals, is named after Alois Jirásek, who was born in the town, and who is regarded as one of the greatest Czech novelists.
The programme of the week-long festival includes 47 theatrical productions from the Czech Republic, including experimental, student and puppet shows.

The celebrated Czech-born author and essayist Milan Kundera will donate his books and archive to the Moravian Library in Brno, the Czech News Agency reported on Thursday. The material will be transported to the Czech Republic from his Paris flat in the autumn.
The archive includes all of Kundera’s books published in Czech as well as translations into more than 40 languages. The library is planning to make the documents available to the public.
The Brno-born writer, who turned 91 this April, emigrated to France in 1975 and has been a French citizen since 1981. Kundera is considered one of the greatest living world authors.

The historical chalet Libušín, which was almost completely destroyed by fire in March 2014, reopened to the public on Thursday. The reconstruction of the famous Art Nouveau building, designed by architect Dušan Jurkovič, cost over CZK 117 million.
The set of historical chalets, including Libušín and Maměnka, opened at Pustevny in 1899 and have become a symbol of the Beskydy Mountains in the east of the country.

Vladimír Dlouhý has been re-elected president of the Czech Chamber of Commerce for another three-year term, the Czech News Agency informed on Thursday. Mr Dlouhý, who is 66, was elected to the post six years ago.
He previously served as industry and trade minister under then prime minister Václav Klaus. After leaving high politics he served as advisor to Goldman Sachs in Central and Eastern Europe.
In June of 2012 Dlouhý announced his candidacy for the 2013 presidential election, but failed to collect enough signatures to enter the race. In order to qualify for the ballot, candidates must gather 50,000 signatures from citizens, or the win the support of twenty deputies or ten senators.

Czech Foreign Minister Tomáš Petříček plans to undertake trade missions to the Middle East and North Africa by the end of the year.
Speaking at the Czech Export Forum on Wednesday, Mr Petříček said business trips should also take place to European countries, such as France, Portugal and Kosovo.
Most of the planned trade missions this year had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and should be resumed in autumn, if the situation allows.
According to the Czech Association of Exporters, Czech exports can drop by CZK 500 billion as a result of the Covid-19 crisis.

The operating profits of Škoda Auto have dropped by nearly 75 percent during the first half of 2020 to € 228 million (approximately CZK six billion) from last year’s € 624 million. The news was announced on Thursday by the Volkswagen Group, which owns the Czech carmaker.
Škoda Auto sales slumped my more than 25 percent to € 7.5 billion (CZK 196.5 billion) from € 10.2 billion in the previous year.
According to Volskwagen, Škoda sold 372,000 vehicles in the first half of 2020, which is a year-on-year drop of 33.6 percent. Among the most popular models were the Kodiaq and Karoq SUVs as well as the new Scala and Kamiq models.
