The Health Ministry has activated a coronavirus “risk” map identifying the risk of Covid-19 in various districts.

The new code system, which is designed as a pandemic plan, reflects the spread of the virus in different districts and spells out specific public health measures as well as instructions to hospitals with regard to readiness for patient influxes.

The districts are rated according to a number of criteria, among them community transmission numbers.

The system uses four colours – red (denoting widespread community transmissions), orange (some risk of community transmissions), green (contained local outbreaks) and white (minimal risk). At this stage no Czech district is marked red or orange.

Around one hundred people took part in a commemorative ceremony for Romany victims of the Holocaust at the Lety memorial in southern Bohemia on Sunday.

Speaking at the ceremony, Čeněk Růžička, from the Committee for compensation of Roma Holocaust victims, called on politicians to condemn hate speech against the Roma as they do expressions of anti-Semitism.

According to  Deputy Ombudswoman Monika Šimůnková, the Czech Republic needs to do more in addressing the problem of discrimination against the Romany minority in the areas of housing and education.

The commemorative event traditionally takes place in May, but was postponed due to the coronavirus.

More than 1,300 Roma men, women and children were held at the camp at Lety. An estimated 327 of them died at the site, largely due to disease; more than 500 of those interned were transported to the Auschwitz death camp in Poland, from which they never returned.

The government is preparing a tax reform that would abolish the so-called “super gross” wage and significantly lower people’s taxes.

The super gross wage, which has been the base for calculating employee income tax since 2008, is the sum of an employee’s gross wage plus social and health insurance premiums.

Instead, the government proposed amendment would introduce a progressive tax rate of 15% for income of up to 1.5 million crowns and 24% for income above this amount.

Entrepreneurs, including those claiming expenses as a percentage of income, would be allowed to deduct 75% of social security and health insurance contributions paid.

Previous attempts to abolish the super gross wage failed because of the loss to state revenues.

Now the government wants to push it through so as to encourage consumer spending and help rev up the economy post-coronavirus.

The number of available flats for long-term rental housing in Prague at the end of the second quarter increased by 97.7 percent year-on-year to 14,738, according to data released by the development company Trigema. The increase is the steepest in four years.

The average price of rent is also down  by 2.4 percent year-on-year, to 319 crowns per square meter per month.

In connection with the coronavirus crisis and drop in foreign tourists, some homeowners who had apartments for short-term rentals have decided to provide them for long-term rent.

However, it can be expected that at least some of these landlords will return to short-term rental of their properties over time, since they tend to be more lucrative than long-term leases, Trigema says.

The demand for bicycles has risen by up to 50 percent year-on-year in recent months, the ctk news agency reports, citing sellers, distributors and manufacturers.

Sellers say their warehouses are almost empty and there is now a waiting list for bicycles in many stores. Some expect the situation to improve in August, others in October at the latest.

The increase in sales is attributed to the fact that the majority of Czechs are holidaying at home this year, as well as the fact that some people bought a bike as an alternative to public transport which they were afraid to use.
