Germany is likely to place the Czech Republic on the list of states which pose a high risk of COVID-19 infection, Foreign Minister Tomáš Petříček told journalists on Tuesday. Czechs travelling to Germany will be required to present a negative Covid-19 test  or go into quarantine.

Mr Petříček said the Czech Republic was currently negotiating exceptions, that would include for example cross-border job commuters.

Germany has already placed Prague and the Central Bohemian region, which are one of the main hotspots of Covid19, on its red list of risky travel destinations.

The newly appointed health minister, Roman Prymula, has said there are no plans for measures that would negatively affect the economy, even though a lockdown would be the easiest solution in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. Mr Prymula made the statement at a press conference following his appointment to office. He said the main priority now was to tackle the problem while keeping the economy running and for primary schools to remain open for as long as possible.

The health minister said there were no immediate plans to impose a state of emergency, although the situation could change in the coming weeks.

In the next few days, the Ministry of Health plans to introduce further restrictions on the opening hours of restaurants and bars, keeping them closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. It also wants to limit the number of people at outdoor events to 100, and indoor events to 50.

In an address to the nation on Monday evening, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš called on Czechs to follow regulations on wearing face masks in order to protect the vulnerable from Covid-19. Mr. Babiš said it had been a mistake to ease measures aimed at containing the virus in the summer, when he had been lulled into a false sense of security by the country’s hitherto success in dealing with it and the atmosphere in society. Unfortunately the epidemic is back, he told TV viewers and radio listeners.

Regarding face masks the PM said nobody enjoyed such restrictions but that masks did not threaten democracy or freedom; rather not wearing them threatens lives, he said.

Mr. Babiš said his government did not wish to impose the kind of restrictions that halted the economy in spring. At the same time it had to place protecting citizens’ lives first and finding the balance between the two was difficult, he said.

Krkonoše officials report over 10,000 visitors daily on Sněžka in summer

Officials from the Krkonoše National Park in North Bohemia say that it experienced above average visitor numbers this summer, with records being broken in some spots. One place that was particularly popular was the country’s highest mountain, Sněžka, which saw average daily visitor numbers of over 10,000.

As elsewhere in the country, tourist figures were up because more Czechs than usual vacationed at home in view of the Covid-19 situation.
