In a first draft of the state budget for 2021, the minister of finance, Alena Schillerová, plans a deficit of CZK 116 billion. However, the deficit is likely to increase greatly before MPs actually approve next year’s budget because of further measures linked to the coronavirus crisis. In addition, the first draft does not include a shortfall of up to CZK 90 billion that will be caused by a reform of the country’s income tax system.

The budget deficit for this year has been increased repeatedly since the coronavirus hit the Czech Republic. It was initially planned at CZK 40 billion but now stands at CZK 500 billion.

The minister of the interior, Jan Hamáček, says that it was a “fatal error” to postpone the reintroduction of compulsory face masks. Speaking in Saturday’s edition of Právo, Mr. Hamáček said he had been skeptical about the earlier loosening of restrictions.

President Miloš Zeman has signed into law a bill abolishing the Czech Republic’s real estate acquisition tax, his spokesperson said. In recent years the 4-percent tax paid by the buyer of property brought CZK 13 billion into the state coffers, the Czech News Agency said.

The minister of finance, Alena Schillerová, had earlier said that the tax would in fact be abolished retroactively from the end of March as the deadline for paying the tax had been postponed to the end of August in view of the coronavirus crisis. If somebody paid it, the money will be returned.
