The Czech Radio Orchestra begins its 94th season this Friday with a concert at the Rudolfinum Palace in Prague under the baton of conductor Alexander Liebreich.
Due to the uptick in Covid-19 cases, the orchestra has changed the program to reduce the risk of spreading the coronavirus. Instead of Luwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Ode to Joy, his Symphony No. 1 in C major was included, as it requires fewer musicians.
The concert will begin with the composition Meditación by Toshio Hosokawa, dedicated to the thousands of victims of the earthquake and tsunami caused by the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster in March 2011.

Czech Defence Minister Lubomír Metnar on Friday announced the signing of a CZK 2.39 billion contract Tatra Defence Vehicle for servicing and maintaining Pandur armoured vehicles until 2024. The Czech Army acquired more than a hundred of these vehicles between the years 2007 and 2013.
At the same time, the Ministry declared it will buy new Spyder anti-aircraft defence systems from the Israeli firm Rafael for nearly CZK 10 billion next year after the signing of an inter-governmental agreement between the Czech Republic and Israel.
The Spyder system is to replace the Soviet-made 2K12 KUB equipment, which is more than 40 years old. Despite these contracts, the Czech government announced earlier this week that it could not meet its commitment as a member of NATO to devote 2% of GDP to military spending within four years.

Czech and Slovak state rail operators have reduced connections between the two countries since Bratislava designated the Czech Republic a high-risk travel destination due to an uptick in Covid-19 cases.
Slovakia has since last week required anyway travelling from the Czech Republic to produce a negative corona test or go into quarantine, with some exceptions for commuters travelling for work.
Earlier, Czech Airlines announced it would suspend flights to Košice, Slovakia, and Amsterdam due to the current epidemiological situation. The carrier will not resume flights to Brussels and Warsaw, as planned for October, and will reduce the number of flights to Copenhagen.

The government has also decided that employees can stay at home on short-time work up to four days a week. They receive 70 percent of their net wage but not more than the average Czech wage.

If the number of Covid-19 cases continues to rise at the present rate hospitals will be short of ventilators within a few weeks, Health Minister Roman Prymula told a closed meeting of Committee for Health in the lower house.
According to a record of the meeting released on Thursday, Mr. Prymula said hospitals must stop distinguishing beds for patients with and without Covid-19 and postpone planned surgeries.
According to data from the Institute of Health Information and Statistics, Czech hospitals have a total of 22,872 beds with the option of supplying the patient with oxygen. 979 of them are reserved for patients with Covid-19.
According to Prymula, their occupancy is close to the limit, but so far the capacity is sufficient. However the capacity of beds with ventilators is fast reaching its limit.
