    Over 9,100 people have applied for compensation for the damage caused by the explosions in Vrbětice munitions depo in South Moravia in 2014. The Interior Ministry has so far payed out more than CZK 298 million in total to nearly 8,600 residents, the office said in a press release on Wednesday.

    The series of explosions, which have since been linked to Russian agents, killed two employees of the munitions depo and caused close to a billion crowns in damages. Thousands of people had to be temporarily evacuated from their homes.

    The Chinese Embassy in the Czech Republic has strongly condemned the ongoing visit of the Speaker of the Taiwanese Parliament, You Si-kun, to Czechia.

    According to a statement issued by the embassy’s spokesperson on Wednesday, the Czech Senate and individual politicians are undermining Czech-Chinese political relations and violating China’s state sovereignty and territorial integrity.

    You Si-kun arrived in Czechia on Monday along with a delegation of the Taiwanese Parliament for a three-day official visit. In his address to the Czech Senate on Wednesday, he warned against the rise of authoritarianism and dictatorship in the world and pointed to China’s ambitions for power.

    Meteorologists have issued an extreme heat warning for the entire country on Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures on Wednesday are expected to exceed 36 degrees Celsius in places and Thursday should bring temperatures of over 35 degrees.

    Tuesday was one of the hottest days of the year in Czechia with two monitoring stations registering a temperature of 35.2 degrees Celsius. Temperature records for July 19 were broken at 15 monitoring stations that have been active for at least 30 years.

    Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský has arrived in Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian top officials. He is accompanied by the Austrian minister of foreign affairs, Alexander Schallenberg.

    The visit is to signal continuing EU support for Ukraine in the war waged by Russia and ascertain the country’s needs at the present time.

    The Czech Foreign Minister also paid a visit to the town of Irpin and the Hostomel air base, which were the scenes of fierce fighting at the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

    The “Sounds of Žofín” festival of brass band music begins at Žofín Palace in Prague on Tuesday. It is taking place alongside the annual conference of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) and will run until 23 July. Sounds of Žofín will welcome brass orchestras from all over the world, offering 32 concerts over four days and featuring 1,800 musicians. The US Marine Band, which is attending the festival for the first time, is due to perform on July 20. The program will also include an exhibition of musical instruments from local and international manufacturers and sheet music.

    Government representatives and union leaders are once again debating a rise in the wages of public sector employees. In view of the soaring inflation, which is now at 17.2 percent, unions are demanding a raise from August or September at the latest. They are demanding a ten percent hike for people on frozen salaries and a fixed amount of 700 to 1,000 crowns for teachers and health workers. They moreover want to negotiate a further increase for all from January. Labour Minister Marian Jurečka said ahead of the talks that the government is counting on a ten percent increase in frozen salaries from September and a ten percent increase for the security forces from January. He wants to reach an agreement with trade unions on other salary increases next year.

    Fines for serious traffic offences could increase up to 25,000 crowns from 2024, in some cases five-fold the present amount, according to a new draft amendment to the Road Traffic Act. The number of penalty points for various transgressions would also change, if the draft is approved in its present form. Other innovations include the possibility to start driving at the age of 17 under supervision or a driving license granted on a two-year test basis.

    The number of newly confirmed Covid-19 cases in Czechia reached 2,895 on Monday, that is 863 more than on the same day last week. It is also the biggest jump since the last wave of the pandemic in late April. The number of people hospitalized with Covid has now reached 524, up by 55 week-on-week. Seventeen of the patients require intensive case. The incidence figure has risen to 109 per 100,000 people. The highest number of infected is in Prague, where it stands at 186.

    Interest in getting a booster shot against Covid is reported to be highest in Prague, which also has the highest number of Covid infections per head, according to the Czech Health Institute. Covid vaccines were made available at vaccination centres around the country without the need to register as of Monday and in Prague short queues appeared outside vaccination centres in some hospitals. In the regions, the interest in inoculation is reported to be much lower, but even so, more people than usual arrived to get the shot. The booster shot is available to anyone over 18 who had their previous vaccination at least four months ago.
