Over 400 firefighters are battling against a massive fire in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park for the fourth day now. The fire has already ravaged over 1,000 hectares of forestland and fire crews are primarily trying to prevent new outbursts and protect the evacuated villages of Mezná, Mezní Louka and Vysoká Lípa. An estimated 450 people have had to leave their homes. Forestry workers have started felling trees in order to contain the blaze.
Large areas of the park have been closed off and the park’s management is to decide today whether to close the entire park to visitors. Many roads in the vicinity as well as the Hřensko border crossing have been closed in order to facilitate the rescue effort.

The fire in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park, which has now spread over the border to Germany, unexpectedly topped the agenda of German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s working visit to Prague. After talks with her Czech counterpart Jan Lipavský, Minister Baerbock said the fire clearly showed the need for a close-knit Central European network of firefighters, helicopters and aircraft who would be on standby for similar emergencies.
Other issues on the agenda were Czech-German relations, the situation in Ukraine and the priorities of the Czech EU Presidency. The two officials also signed a Strategic Dialogue work program for the period 2022-2024. In the afternoon the German foreign minister paid homage to the victims of the Lidice massacre committed by the Nazis on June10, 1942 in retaliation for the killing of Nazi governor Reinhard Heydrich.

The summer wave of the Covid pandemic appears to be nearing its peak in Czechia. Laboratories registered 3,771 new cases on Monday, which is 900 more than on the same day last week. There were 1281 reinfections. The number of people hospitalized with Covid is now 992, up by 333 compared to last week. Thirty-six of these patients require intensive care. No restrictions are being imposed and the Health Ministry is reportedly not planning any in the immediate future. People over 60 and those with chronic illnesses have been advised to get a booster shot.

Gas storage facilities in Czechia are now filled to 80 percent capacity, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said on Twitter on Monday night, noting that this is a record level. The Czech Republic has thus reached the limit to which European Union states must fill their gas storage tanks by November as a precaution against a possible halt in supplies from Russia. Deliveries of Russian gas via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline have now been limited to 20 percent. The annual gas consumption in the Czech Republic is about 9.4 billion cubic meters and the country gets about 98 per cent of its gas from Russia. In order to help cover its needs, Czechia plans to use gas from a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in The Netherlands.

The number of temporary protection visas issued by the Czech Republic to Ukrainian refugees has reached 400,000, Interior Minister Vít Rakušan told reporters. He added however that school enrolment numbers suggest there are now fewer than 300,000 Ukrainians in the country. The number of war refugees who have found work in this country is close to 90,000. Those who have not will have to start paying for their own health insurance after 150 days in the country.

State spending in 2022 is expected to increase by more than 110 billion crowns compared to the original budget approved in March of this year. The deficit for the 2022 state budget should grow to 326.9 billion crowns, Finance Minister Zbyněk Stanjura told Czech Television on Monday. The increase is due to the extra finances spent on pension hikes to make up for inflation, on energy saving tariffs and on coping with the refugee crisis. The amendment does not foresee any tax increases. The cabinet will discuss the proposed amendment on Wednesday.

Efforts to contain and put out a forest fire in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park may take days, the head of the Czech National Fire Brigade, Vladimír Vlček said on Tuesday. He said over 400 firefighters from 84 units are now battling the massive fire which started in hard-to-access terrain on Sunday morning and was whipped up by a strong wind. Over the past three days it has ravaged close to 1,000 hectares of forestland in the national park and spread to Germany.
Three German units are helping to fight the fire and the Czech authorities have asked for international assistence in the form of planes and helicopters to help douse the blaze. Slovakia, Poland and Italy have all responded positively to the request.
Hundreds of people have now been evacuated from the affected area. The village of Mezna was partly destroyed by the fire during the night hours but all the inhabitants had been evacuated and no one has so far been reported injured. On Tuesday night firefighters evacuated hundreds of people from the Vysoká Lípa municipality.
People have been asked to stay well away from the affected area and a large part of the park has been closed off to visitors. The prime minister, interior minister and environment minister are attending crisis meetings at the site.

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský has said he is deeply shocked by the execution of four dissidents by the Myanmar junta. They lost their lives in the fight for freedom, Lipavský wrote on Twitter. Once again, we witness that in some countries people have to fight for and defend democracy with their lives, the Czech foreign minister wrote. The Czech Republic has long been a staunch supporter of Myanmar’s democracy movement. Among those executed are a leader of the NLD who was close to Aung San Suu Kyi, and a veteran of Myanmar’s democracy movement. This is the first time in 25 years that the country has executed political prisoners.

More tons of dead fish were discovered floating in the Dyje River in the Breclav region on Sunday, the Moravian Fishermen’s Association reported. Just last week fishermen cleaned the river of 20 tons of dead fish. The reason is reported to be loss of oxygen in the river in connection with the overgrowth of cyanobacteria. Fishermen believe that the lack of oxygen in the water had to do with the fact that a hydroelectric power plant in the vicinity was left running after last week’s tragedy. The matter is being investigated.
