    Laboratories in Czechia registered 342 new cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, which is about a third more than on the same day of the previous week. In addition, they recorded 100 suspected cases of reinfection. Nearly 700 people were hospitalized with Covid on Sunday, a rise of 150 in the course of a week. Twenty-seven of them require intensive care. No restrictions have so far been imposed. People over 60 and those with chronic illnesses have been advised to get a booster shot.

    Sales of electric appliances are reported to have skyrocketed as Czechs prepare for a harsh winter marked by a steep increase in the price of gas or its shortage. Salespeople report an increased interest in electric cookers and electric heaters. Coal or wood sellers are also overwhelmed with orders. Sales of table-top cookers, double-plate cookers and freestanding ovens have increased by several hundred percent, and in many cases demand far exceeds supply. Prime Minister Petr Fiala has warned Czechs to brace for a tough winter and lower their gas and electricity consumption as far as possible right away.

    Confidence in the Czech economy fell by 2.6 points month-on-month in July to 95.7 points, the Czech Statistics Office reported. The confidence indicator decreased among both businesses and consumers. The business confidence indicator fell by 2.9 points to 100.2 compared with June and the consumer confidence indicator fell by 1.1 points to 73.6. Consumer pessimism has been growing steadily in the past five months, and in July the confidence indicator fell to its lowest level since January 2003, the start of monitoring.

    War refugees from Ukraine who have been here for more than 150 days will need to sort out their health insurance, Czech Radio reported on Monday citing government sources. After 150 days, refugees aged 18 to 65 who are here on humanitarian visas lose their right to automatic health insurance paid by the state. If they have not started working, they will have to contact an insurance company and settle the matter themselves. NGOs say many are unaware of this obligation.

    Czech athletes Filip Houška and Matouš Tůma won the bronze medal in the men’s relay at the 2022 World Modern Pentathlon Championships in Alexandria, Egypt on Saturday night.

    The Czechs finished behind the victorious South Korean duo Jun Woong-tae and Jung Jin-hwa and the Egyptians Eslam Hamad and Ahmed Hamed, who came second.

    It is the first medal for Czech modern pentathlon since the 2018 World Championships in Mexico, where Jan Kuf and Martin Vlach finished second in the relay.

    The fire in the Bohemian Switzerland national park is reported to be spreading fast due to a strong wind. It has now destroyed over ten hectares of forest land in the vicinity of Hřensko in the Dečín region and started spreading to neighbouring Germany. Forty nine firefighter units, three of them from neighbouring Germany, are presently fighting the blaze which  is now moving towards the Pravčická brána rock formation, one of the park's main tourist attractions. More than 200 people have been evacuated from the area. Environment Minister Anna Hubáčkova is attending a crisis meeting on site. No one has been reported injured.

    Czech triathlete Petra Kuříková won the gold medal at a World Cup event in Ponteverda, Spain on Sunday. The 30-year-old athlete finished 13 seconds ahead of Germany’s Lisa Tertsch.

    It was the first World Cup victory for Kuříková, who finished in the 30th place in the Olympic triathlon event at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

    Young Czech violinist Daniel Matejča has won the Eurovision Young Musicians 2022 contest on Saturday night in Montpellier, France with his performance of a violin concerto by Dmitri Shostakovich. The 17-year-old Czech finished ahead of German cellist Philipp Schupelius and Norway’s violinist Alma Serafin Kraggerud.

    As the winner of the competition Matejča will get to perform at the Festival Radio France Occitanie Montpellier in 2023. The Eurovision Young Musicians has been held every two years since 1982 and is open to young talents between the ages of 12 and 21.
