Unless the government finds a solution to combating rising energy prices that would help struggling businesses, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs is ready to launch a so-called “kurzarbeit” short-time work scheme  in which private sector employees agree to a reduction in working time and pay, with the state making up for all or part of the lost wages, Vice-Premier and Labour Minister Marian Jurečka told CNN Prima News on Sunday.

The government is now trying to find an EU-wide solution to the problém in order to ensure that the pressure on energy prices is spread out equaly, the minister said. If this were to fail to happen, the government would introduce its own measures which could include a cap on energy prices, he said.

Defence ministers of Czechia, Poland and Slovakia signed a joint declaration on Saturday that, starting from September, Czech and Polish aircraft will help Slovakia in the defence of her skies, Czech Radio reports.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Slovakia decided to prematurely terminate its MiG-29 fighter arm and acquire F-16s. However, the US aircraft are yet to be supplied and the Central European state therefore needs help in patrolling its airspace in the short term.

It has not been ruled out that Slovakia’s MiGs may be sent to Ukraine.

On Saturday, Czech Defence Minister Jana Černochová also signed an agreement with her Slovak counterpart Jaroslav Naď that the two countries will cooperate in their purchase of Swedish CV90 infantry fighting vehicles. The two ministers said that they hope this will result in lower purchasing prices as well as work for Czech and Slovak companies in maintaining the vehicles and manufacturing spare parts.

As part of Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, Czechia could help the country rebuild parts of its Dnipro region, the Czech News Agency reported on Sunday, citing Czechia’s ambassador to Kyiv, Radek Matula. An alternative to this, the ambassador said, would be to engage individual countries according to the economic sectors they would be assigned to rebuild. If this were the case, Czechia could offer help in the energy, transport and health sectors, as well as support in demining and decontaminating affected regions of Ukraine, Mr Matula said.

He said that in September it will become more clear what form Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction plan takes.

The Czech Chamber of Deputies approved Finland and Sweden’s entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) on Saturday. The two Nordic states applied for membership in early July, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The entry of the two countries into NATO has already been passed by the Senate as well and is therefore only pending the signature of the Czech president, who has earlier expressed himself as in favour of their membership.

Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský said that Finland and Sweden’s entry into NATO is in the interests of the Czech Republic.
