The poultry farmers' union has stated that farmers are having trouble renewing energy supply contracts after their fixed-rate period ends, the Czech News Agency reports. Dozens of Czech poultry farmers are facing the risk of having to close business as a result. Poultry farmers only get fixed rate contracts on a monthly rather than yearly basis, which makes it even more difficult for them than the general population. Electricity prices are at least three and a half times higher than before, and gas prices even more so. In addition to expensive energy, poultry farmers are also having to deal with a sharp increases in the price of chicken feed.

A survey by the Agrarian Chamber and the Czech-Moravian Poultry Union in spring showed that about 52 percent of businesses plan to limit poultry farming, while roughly six percent will come to a complete stop.

The Prague Municipal Court declared Sberbank CZ, a bank with links to Russia, bankrupt on Friday. The court ordered that a review hearing on registered claims be held on October 6, which will be followed by a creditor meeting on the same day, according to information in the Insolvency Register. When a bank is declared bankrupt, the debtor's assets are sold off and the proceeds are distributed among its creditors. At the end of June, the bank had tens of thousands of creditors, to whom it recorded obligations of CZK 61.762 billion.

The Czech National Bank legally revoked Sberbank CZ's banking license at the beginning of May, and the Prague Municipal Court then sent the bank into liquidation, due to the outflow of deposits from Sberbank CZ after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The application for insolvency was filed by the bank itself and the court launched the insolvency proceedings against Sberbank CZ in late July.

According to the Financial Analytical Office, Sberbank CZ is formally owned by the largest Russian bank Sberbank, which is on the EU's sanctions list, but Sberbank does not control the Czech bank's affairs. The assets of the Czech bank are therefore not subject to anti-Russian sanctions.

The Association of Regions of the Czech Republic, which represents the interests of the 14 regional governments in the country, has called on the Czech state to regulate energy prices for households from January, the Czech News Agency reports. The governor for South Bohemia, Martin Kuba, told journalists that the increase in energy prices has been so sudden and rapid that the government does not so much have a crisis on their hands as a collapse. He said the state should aim to obtain a 100 percent share in energy group ČEZ's production capacity and designate a state-owned energy trader to whom energy companies would have to sell. However, according to Prime Minister Petr Fiala, the proposal is not new and none of the proposed measures has a quick and simple solution.

Universities are considering switching to long distance learning during the upcoming winter period due to high energy prices. The Chairman of the Council of Universities, Milan Pospíšil, told the Czech News Agency on Thursday that Czech tertiary learning institutions will see their energy costs rise by CZK 1.5 billion when compared to last year to a total of around CZK 8 billion. Universities will not be able to pay for these expenses unless they receive help from the state, he said.

The head of the Czech Rectors Conference, Martin Bareš, is therefore in negotiations with the government about possible support.
