The Mayors and Independents Party which was hit by a corruption scandal in recent weeks suffered the biggest losses. In the Senate elections the party defended five seats and fielded 14 candidates in 27 districts. However, only four of them made it to the second round. Party leader Vít Rakušan said that he was disappointed by the outcome but in view of the scandal surrounding the party the results in municipal elections were better than he had dared to hope. He said it would now be up to the party to prove itself.

Opposition leader and ANO party head Andrej Babiš has said he is satisfied with the election result since his party had significantly improved its standing in municipal elections and had 18 candidates who would be competing in the second round of Senate elections next weekend. However he said he had hoped for a bigger turnout. Turnout in the municipal elections was 46 percent.

The opposition leader had called on the public to treat these elections as a referendum on the government’s performance and indicated that he might reconsider his earlier-stated intention to leave politics.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala of the Civic Democrats welcomed the election outcome, saying that it was proof that cooperation between the five parties in the ruling coalition is viable and should continue. He thanked voters for coming to the polls adding that if these elections had been a referendum on the government’s performance at a difficult time then it had clearly passed the test.

In the Senate elections, three candidates were elected in the first round of voting. Senator Ladislav Václavec from the ANO party crossed the 50 percent vote margin in the Bruntál region, as did Christian Democrat candidate Petr Fiala in Ústí nad Orlicí and Jiří Růžička for TOP 09 in Prague 6.

The second round of voting in the Senate elections, due next weekend, will be a standoff between candidates for the ruling coalition and the opposition ANO party. Regardless of the outcome, it is clear that the ruling coalition will maintain its dominance in the Senate.

Among those contesting a seat in the second round will be the Speaker of the Senate Miloš Vystrčil who won 45.5 percent of the vote in the first round against Jana Nagyova from ANO who won 30.7 percent. The contest was closely watched since Ms. Nagyova is among those charged in connection with the Stork’s Nest scandal linked to ANO leader Andrej Babiš.

Voter turnout in the Senate elections was close to 42 percent.
