    EU ministers approved a relief package of measures to combat the energy crisis in Brussels on Friday.

    The package includes the redistribution of profits exceeding EUR 180 per MWh for suppliers of nuclear and renewable sources of electricity, as well as a minimum 33 percent tax on extraordinary profits for fossil fuel suppliers, the Czech News Agency reported on Friday. The extra tax income will be used to support citizens who have been most affected by the crisis, as well as for supporting businesses and financing support measures.

    The package was approved during the ongoing Czech presidency of the Council of the EU.

    Within the first 24 hours of activating checks on the border with Slovakia Czech police have detained 11 migrant traffickers and 247 illegal migrants in the South Moravian Region, the Czech News Agency reported on Friday, citing police spokesman Petr Vala.

    Border checks across 17 crossings on the Czech-Slovak border were put in place on Thursday in light of a rise in illegal migration to Europe, particularly from Syria.

    Czechs in 25 constituencies go to the polls to cast their ballot in a second round of senatorial elections on Friday and Saturday. The vote in three constituencies where candidates won over 50 percent of the voter support has already been decided. Regardless of the outcome of the elections to a third of seats in the Senate, it is already clear that the ruling parties will retain their majority in the upper house.

    Voting ends at 2pm on Saturday.

    Covid-19 epidemic in Czechia continues to accelerate. Some 17,100 new cases of the virus were recorded in the country over the past seven days, about 1,300 more than the previous week. For the first time since April, the daily increase in new cases exceeded 4,000 this week.

    On Thursday, laboratories detected 3,670 new cases of Covid-19, slightly fewer than in the previous days. The number of people hospitalized with Covid rose by about 370 week-on-week to 1,361, with 46 of them in serious condition.

    Czechia will receive $106 million (approximately CZK 2.7 billion) from the United States for military modernisation, partial compensation for supplies to Ukraine and cyber protection. The financial aid, which is part of the second Supplemental Ukraine Package, was approved by the US Congress on Thursday.

    One hundred million dollars will come from the US Foreign Military Financing Program as part of the second Supplemental Ukraine Package approved by the US Congress. Another six million dollars from the Countering Russian Influence Fund will be used to support the creation of a Deployable Cyber Response Centre within the Czech Army.

    According to Prime Minister Petr Fiala, the US financial aid proves that Czechia’s key allies appreciate its support for Ukraine. He said the funds will help to replace the military material donated to Ukraine and accelerate the modernisation of the army.

    The Czech minister of foreign affairs, Jan Lipavský, hopes that the EU will reach political agreement on abolishing visas for Kosovo citizens during the Czech Presidency of the EU Council.

    Mr. Lipavský made the statement at a press conference in Pristina on Thursday following a meeting with Kosovo’s First Deputy Prime Minister Besnik Bislimi.

    The Czech Foreign Minister also said that advancing the EU integration process of the Western Balkan states was one of the priorities of the Czech Presidency.

    The Czech presidency of the EU is due to convene a summit to discuss Kosovo and the visa liberalisation in October.

    The purchase price of flats in Czechia has more than doubled over the past ten years, according to the data released by the Czech Statistics Office on Thursday.

    The Housing Price Index, which measures the prices changes of all types of residential properties throughout Europe, increased by 23.1 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2022. Compared to the second quarter of 2012, residential property prices rose 132.6 per cent.

    The Housing Price Index has been rising continuously since the end of 2013 and according to the Eurostat data, it is the second highest in Czechia, following Hungary.

    The price of fuel in Czechia continues to fall, reaching the lowest level since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine,

    According to CCS data, a litre of the most popular Natural 95 has fallen by almost 80 halers to CZK 37.56 per litre within the past week. The average price of Diesel is CZK 43.01 per litre, which is the lowest figure in five weeks.

    At the same time, a litre of petrol is still about CZK 3.50 more expensive than a year ago, while the price of diesel has increased by around CZK 11 year-on-year.

    Czech tennis player Karolína Muchová has reached her first quarter-final this year, beating Swiss Viktorija Golubic 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 in Tallin on Wednesday night.

    Another Czech to reach the last eight of the Tallin Open WTA tournament is Barbora Krejčíková, who defeated Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine 7-5, 6-3. She will play Brazilian Beatriz Hadda Maia in the next round.
