According to former chief of the general staff Jiří Šedivý the partial mobilization announced by President Putin shows that Russia has reached a turning point in the war when it desperately needs new recruits in order to avoid losing conquered territory in Ukraine. This may create a difficult situation for Ukraine on the front, because although Russia will not have better troops, it will have an advantage in quantity, general Šedivý said. He noted that much would depend on how the Russians use the mobilized units since the troops would need several weeks to align and master more sophisticated equipment.

Czechia will never recognize the outcome of the pseudo-referendums that Moscow plans to hold in the occupied eastern regions of Ukraine, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský wrote on Twitter. Mr. Lipavský said the referendums were an obvious attempt to annex more Ukrainian territory as happened in the case of Crimea, adding that they constituted a flagrant violation of international law for which Moscow must be held accountable. The EU warned earlier that if Russia presses ahead with annexation referendums in Ukraine’s occupied eastern areas, it would not recognize the result and would prepare potential new sanctions against Moscow.

The partial mobilisation announced on Wednesday morning by Russian President Vladimir Putin is an attempt to further escalate the war in Ukraine and is further proof that Russia is the only aggressor in the conflict, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said in a statement to the Czech News Agency.
Mr. Putin made the announcement of partial mobilisation in a televised speech broadcast at 9am Moscow time. Some 300,000 members of the military reserve forces will be called up and the mobilisation should begin immediately, according to news site Novinky.cz.

There were 3,222 new confirmed cases of covid-19 registered in Czechia on Tuesday, an increase of about 200 from the same day a week ago. A further 1,434 people were re-infected with the virus. The daily number of cases has been increasing for around two weeks now in a week-on-week comparison.

Striker Patrik Schick, who plays for German club Bayer Leverkusen, has won the Golden Ball award for the best Czech footballer of the season for the first time in his career, the Czech News Agency reports. He has knocked the winner from 2020 and 2021, midfielder Tomáš Souček, who plays for West Ham, from the top spot.
Schick, who is 26, also won the title of Czech Footballer of the Year 2021 in a poll organised by the Czech Football Association in May.
The winner of the Golden Ball is decided each year by a poll of Czech sports journalists. The organisers of the competition announced the winners in Prague on Tuesday.

The member states of the European Union formally approved a loan of five billion euros for Ukraine on Tuesday, the Czech News Agency reports. EU finance ministers agreed on the aid, which will cover Ukraine's expenses for about a month, at an informal meeting in Prague last week.
The approved loan follows from an EU summit at the end of May where leaders gave the green light to a financial support package worth nine billion euros. However, due to disputes over the method of guarantee, only one billion has been released so far. Czech finance minister Zbyněk Stanjura declared today on behalf of the Czech EU presidency that he will press for the approval of the remaining three billion euros from the aforementioned package at further meetings with his colleagues.
The European Commission wants to release the approved financial support in installments. Ukraine could receive the first installment in October.

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský will meet with ministers from the Visegrad Group countries, the Bucharest Nine, and the Foreign Affairs Council on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly currently taking place at the UN Headquarters in New York, the Czech News Agency reports.
As the presiding country of the EU Council, Czechia is also organising many events and the foreign minister is due to make a record number of appearances at the assembly. He will make a speech on Wednesday evening in the General Debate, and on Thursday evening, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is hosting a Transatlantic dinner at which Mr. Lipavský will speak about the legacy of the first president of the Czech Republic, Václav Havel.
The Czech head of diplomacy also has meetings planned with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo, and his counterparts from various countries around the world including Azerbaijan, Japan, and the UAE, among others. The main topics of the meetings include the war in Ukraine and its effects, including inflation and the energy and food crises.

Czech company Allwyn Entertainment, part of a conglomerate owned by Czech billionaire businessman Karel Komárek, has been made the official operator of the UK National Lottery. The ten-year licence to operate the National Lottery is the largest public sector contract in the UK.
The Gambling Commission, the public body responsible for regulating gambling in Britain, made the decision on Tuesday. They had already chosen Allwyn to be the operator of the licence back in the spring; however, the company Camelot, which has been operating the lottery until now, appealed against the decision.
Allwyn won, among other things, by promising to raise significantly more for charity than Camelot and to invest heavily in new digital products.

There were 3,786 new confirmed cases of covid-19 registered in Czechia on Monday. This is the highest number of new cases recorded in a single day since mid-April and an increase of about 500 from the same day a week ago.
However, the number of hospitalised patients has decreased in a week-on-week comparison. There were 806 people in hospital with the virus on Monday, down from 863 on the same day last week.
