    In response to the energy crisis, the Czech Ministry of Health is proposing to reduce the minimum permissible temperatures in the working environment. The draft amendment to the Occupational Health Regulation will be discussed by the government on Monday. For drivers, assembly line workers or cashiers, the temperature would drop from the current 18 to 16 degrees Celsius, in changing rooms from 20 to 18 degrees, in washrooms from 22 to 19 degrees, in showers from 25 to 19 degrees and in toilets from 18 to 15 degrees. Health Minister Vlastimil Válek said that some institutions, such as hospitals and facilities for seniors would not be expected to meet these norms.

    Czech MEP Jaroslava Jermanová has been elected chair of the European Committee of the Regions' Commission for Economic Policy (ECON). Ms Jermanová will chair ECON's work over the forthcoming two and half years. The commission's main role is to coordinate the work of the European Committee of the Regions – the EU's assembly of regional and local authorities - on issues related to economic and industrial policy, such as competition, state aid policy and public procurement,

    The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a letter to the NHL management warning that Russian hockey players from the San Jose and Nashville teams will not be granted visas for the upcoming games in Prague. Deputy Foreign Minister Martin Smolek said in a statement that they were not welcome in Czechia because of Russia’s war with Ukraine. The teams, which are due to play at Prague’s O2 Arena on October 7 - 8, each have at least one Russian player.

    The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs is proposing a regulation which would allow Ukrainians to apply for a residence permit in the Czech Republic to study, even if they have received temporary protection in another EU member state. According to the ministry, many Ukrainian applicants were admitted to Czech universities for the 2022/2023 academic year and a significant number of them have received temporary protection in another EU country. Under the current legislation their application for a residence permit in the Czech Republic would automatically be rejected. Belarusians who apply for a residence permit to study at a university in Czechia on the basis of scholarships provided by Czech authorities, the European Union or international organisations should also be exempted from the visa ban.

    Czechs are voting in municipal elections and elections to a third of the Senate, the upper house of Parliament. Approximately a quarter of all eligible voters cast their ballot on Friday, the first day of the elections. Among the first to vote in their constituencies were party leaders and President Milos Zeman. In a brief statement for Czech Television the head of state urged Czechs to exercise their voting right and help shape the future of their respective municipality.  Referendums on local issues are taking place in 14 municipalities.

    A total of 178 candidates are contesting 27 seats in the Senate and close to 200, 000 people are running for 60,000 seats in local councils. A second round of voting in the Senate elections will take place next weekend for contestants who fail to win 50 percent of the vote.

    Polling stations close at 2pm on Saturday. The first results, with around 75 percent of votes counted, are expected on Saturday evening, the final result on Sunday morning.

A second round of voting in the Senate elections will take place next weekend for contestants who fail to win 50 percent of the vote.

    A total of 178 candidates are contesting 27 seats in the Senate and close to 200, 000 people are running for 60,000 seats in local councils. In both cases the candidate pool is lower in number than in the previous elections.

    Polling stations are open from 2pm on Friday till 10 pm and from 8am till 2pm on Saturday.

    The first results are expected on Saturday evening, the final result on Sunday morning.

    President Miloš Zeman will attend an upcoming Visegrad Group presidential summit in Slovakia in October, the Office of the President announced on Friday. The heads of state of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary will discuss primarily the war in Ukraine, its impact on Europe and the  ongoing energy crisis, the report said. The meeting of V4 presidents, to take place on October 11 in Bratislava, is the first meeting of Visegrad heads of state since the start of the war in Ukraine.

    Taiwan and Czechia have signed memoranda of understanding on cooperation in the fields of education, science and culture. A delegation of Czech senators and ministry representatives, led by the chairman of the Senate’s Education Committee, Jiří Drahoš, is in Taiwan for talks aimed at revitalizing ties and tapping new cooperation potential in these fields. According to Taipei Radio, Mr. Drahoš called for the introduction of direct flights between Taipei and Prague, which would help facilitate closer contacts in culture and education and bring more Taiwanese tourists to Czechia. Before the Covid pandemic around 200,000 Taiwanese visited Czechia annually, but their numbers have since dropped significantly.

    EU ministers for consumer protection are meeting in Prague on Friday to debate consumer rights across Europe. According to Czech Trade and Industry Minister Jozef Sikela the debate will focus on the challenges of consumer protection online and offline as well as the need to afford a special measure of protection to vulnerable groups, such as seniors. Another issue discussed is the impact of the war in Ukraine on consumers.
