Tourists have begun returning to the Pravčice Gate sandstone bridge, two months after a major fire hit the Czech Switzerland National Park in the north of the country. Hundreds of Czechs and foreigners visited the popular site on Saturday, following its official reopening.

In addition a bar on entering the national park at night has been lifted, while a popular pathway has also been reopened.

The fire was the worst of its kind seen in the independent Czechia. It broke out in late July and caused smoke that could be seen in many parts of the country.

A deficit of CZK 280 billion was approved for this year; however, it is set to be increased to CZK 375 billion.

Round two of voting to one-third of the seats in the Czech Senate is taking place for a second day. The ballots will close in 24 constituencies at 2 pm on Saturday.

The polls will decide whether the opposition ANO or the parties in the government coalition boost their position in the upper chamber.

One of the most closely watched races is in Jihlava, where Senate speaker Miloš Vystrčil of the Civic Democrats is up against ANO’s Jana Nagyová, who is currently on trial for corruption with her party boss Andrej Babiš.

Three Senate seats were filled last weekend when candidates received over 50 percent in the first round.

“The Czech Republic does not recognise the referendums on annexation of the four Ukrainian regions to Russia,” Czech Prime Minister Pete Fiala stated on Twitter on Friday. He said that the annexation of these territories by the Russian Federation is “unacceptable and illegitimate.” The Czech government further considers these territories Ukrainian, he said.

The statement came after Vladimir Putin signed “accession treaties” that formalize Russia’s illegal annexation of four occupied regions in Ukraine, the largest forcible takeover of territory in Europe since the second world war.

Earlier on Friday, Czechia’s Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský told Czech Radio that the referendum in the Russian occupied territories of Ukraine was a sham and that further EU sanctions on Russia are being prepared.

The four partially occupied territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia in Ukraine, officially voted for becoming a part of Russia this week in a referendum widely condemned within the international community as illegitimate.

The mission was originally supposed to end in July, but was extended upon Lithuania’s request because no replacement could be found, the head of Čáslav air base Jaroslav Mika told journalists.

Czech pilots have been taking part in missions to guard NATO members’ airspace since 2009.

He reiterated that Czechia does not accept the referendum results and stressed that Ukraine must be supported so that she can maintain her territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence.

Mr Lipavský refused to disclose further details relating to Czech deliveries of military equipment to Ukraine, but said that support is ongoing.
