    The Czech prime minister, Petr Fiala, will hold talks with his British counterpart, Liz Truss, at his official Kramář Villa residence in Prague on Thursday, Czech government officials said on Tuesday. The UK leader will be in the city for the first summit of the European Political Community, a new grouping, at Prague Castle.

    Mr. Fiala and Ms. Truss are expected to discuss Ukraine, Czech-UK cooperation and cooperation between the EU and the UK.

    Dozens of European leaders will be in Prague for the EPC meeting and an informal EU summit the following day.

    The lower house’s Mandates and Immunity Committee will not start a disciplinary hearing with Tomio Okamura, boss of the Freedom and Direct Democracy Party. An MP from the Mayors party, Lucie Potůčková, filed a complaint against Mr. Okamura over comments he made about TOP 09 leader Markéta Pekarová Adamová.

    In an address in the Chamber of Deputies Mr. Okamura made reference to the fact that that the TOP 09 chairwoman did not have children. MP Potůčková said this was over the line.

    The lower house committee did say that Mr. Okamura’s comments had been inappropriate.

    President Miloš Zeman has promised to quickly facilitate the replacement of Anna Hubáčková as minister of the environment, the leader of her party the Christian Democrats, Marian Jurečka, said on Tuesday. She is set to be replaced by a deputy chairman of the Christian Democrats, Petr Hladík.

    Ms. Hubáčková said on Monday that she was facing surgery and up to six months of recovery, which would limit her ability to carry out the role of minister.

    The three-party Together alliance, who are members of the Czech governing coalition, have said that they will not put forward their own candidate for president in elections. At a press conference on Tuesday, Prime Minister Petr Fiala of the Civic Democrats said that Together would be recommending that people vote for one of three candidates: Petr Pavel, Danuše Nerudová or Pavel Fischer.

    Together plan to run a campaign prior to the elections highlighting the values they regard as important in choosing a president.

    The main opposition ANO party are expected to reveal their plans for the presidential election in late October.

    The three-party Together alliance and ANO have reached agreement on most areas, with the exception of social issues, in talks on forming a new city council in Prague. Together’s candidate for mayor, Bohuslav Svoboda of the Civic Democrats, said negotiations between the two on Monday evening had been substantive. Further talks between the two parties should take place within a week.

    Elections to the capital’s assembly were held a week and a half ago. Together claimed 25 percent of the vote while ANO took 19 percent.

    The new principal conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Petr Popelka, helmed the ensemble for the first time in a concert at Prague’s Rudolfinum on Monday night. The opening concert of the orchestra’s 96th season featured, among other pieces, Brahms’ Violin Concerto with German soloist Franz Peter Zimmermann.

    The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra plans 27 concerts at various venues in the Czech capital in its 2022/2023 season.

    Some 4,818 new cases of covid-19 were confirmed in Czechia on Monday, slightly more than on the same day a week ago. Patients in hospital with the virus increased by roughly a fifth to 1,666, and the number of repeated infections also increased significantly. However, the number of hospitalised patients in a critical condition was 42, a decrease of four from Monday a week ago.

    The number of people in hospital with covid is now the highest in six months. Some hospitals have stopped allowing visitors or are making respirators mandatory again, the Czech News Agency reports.

    Eight people have been arrested in Brno on suspicion of accepting bribes, participation in an organised criminal group, and abuse of official authority, in connection with the allocation of some apartments and non-residential premises in the city. Police officers from the National Centre for Combatting Organized Crime are conducting house searches, the Czech News Agency reports.

    In recent years, there have been several police interventions in Brno in connection with the purchase of apartments and the taking of bribes. In one case, an organized criminal group that included local politicians from the ANO party were found to have influenced public contracts at the town hall of the Brno-central district. The former deputy mayor of the district was sentenced to 9.5 years in prison, and eight other people and two companies were also sentenced by the court.

    Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský has summoned Alexander Zmejevsky, the Russian ambassador to the Czech Republic, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for flagrant violations of international law and the illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories, the foreign minister announced on Twitter on Monday. Mr. Lipavský said that Czechia has made it clear to Russia that they will not tolerate criminal aggression and blatant theft of territory, the Czech News Agency reports.

    On Friday Russian President Vladimir Putin began the process of seizing four Ukrainian regions totalling about 15 percent of the area of ​​Ukraine: the Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions, as well as the pro-Russian separatist Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic. Ukraine and the West have rejected the annexation as illegal.
