    Eight-year-old chestnut stallion Mr Spex and his jockey Lukáš Matuský won the 132nd edition of Grand Pardubice steeplechase on Sunday.

    The horse from the Lokotrans stable came ahead of last year’s winner Talent,  ridden by Pavel Složil, and Sacamir led by the jockey Jakub Kocman.

    Just nine out of the 15 horses taking part in the race made it to the finish line of one of the hardest steeplechases in Europe.

    The 6.9km race, in which horses above the age of six are allowed to compete, awards a CZK five million prize to the winner.

    Czechia has confirmed the second case of the new fast-spreading Omicron variant in the country. A sample of BA.2.75 variant nicknamed “Centaurus” was sequenced in mid in mid-September at the University Hospital Hradec Králové, the Czech News Agency reported on Sunday, citing data of the State Health Institute.

    The variant, which was first spotted in India, is thought to be transmitted up to five times more easily than the original variant. It was first detected in Czechia at the end of August by a laboratory in Prague.

    Some 320 soldiers will be deployed as of Sunday to assist police and customs officers in guarding the state border with Slovakia. Soldiers from ground forces and members of active reserves will be based in the South Moravia, Zlín and Moravia-Silesia regions.

    Czechia reinstated controls at 27 former border crossings with Slovakia on September 28 in response to an increase in illegal migration. They were originally supposed to last until Saturday, but this week the government approved extending them for another twenty days, until 28 October.

    Since the reintroduction of the border checks, police officers have detected around 1,700 migrants and seized nearly 50 smugglers.

    Czech tennis player Barbora Krejčíková defeated Wimledon champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 to advance to the final of the Ostrava Open on Saturday.

    Krejčíková, ranked No 23, extended her winning streak to eight. She will face World No 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland in the final, who won her 10th straight match against Ekaterina Alexandrova.

    The Czech Actors' Association presented the prestigious annual Thalia Awards at Prague’s National Theatre on Saturday night. The awards are given in recognition of exceptional performances in the fields of drama, opera and ballet as well as for lifetime achievement.

    Veronika Korytářová and Saša Rašilov picked up the main prizes in the drama category, the former for her portrayal of the legendary Czech comedian Vlasta Burian, the latter for his performance in the play My Realm Is from This World.

    Lifetime achievement award was handed to actor Bolek Polívka, who is known as an entertainer to the broad public but also excelled in serious roles, receiving the Czech Lion for the role of a parish priest in the film Forgotten Light and for his role in the film We Must Help Each Other.

    Czech police have detained more than 157 migrants and four smugglers over the past 24 hours, th epolice announced on Twitter on Saturday.

    Czech Interior Minister Vít Rakušan is attending an informal ministerial summit of the MED5 group, consisting of Italy, Spain, Malta, Cyprus and Greece, which takes place in the Cypriot town of Paphos on Saturday and focuses on illegal migration.

    On Friday, the Czech Interior Minister signed an agreement with his Cypriot counterpart Nico Nouris for Czechia to provide one million euros in financial aid to Cyprus to assist the island with voluntary migrant deportations.

    Mr Rakušan also visited Greece, where he held talks with Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis. He thanked Athens for securing EU’s external border and said Czechia was working to ensure that the current migration wave was tackled at EU level.

    Several thousand trade union members along with supporters of the Social Democrats and the Communists gathered on Prague's Wenceslas Square on Saturday afternoon to demonstrate against rising prices and the decline in living standards in Czechia.

    The event was convened by the Czech Confederation of Trade Unions, the largest trade union headquarters in the country, which has around 270,000 members. The head of the unions, Josef Středula, is currently collecting signatures to run for president.

    The union members have called on the government to start taking decisions that will prevent people from falling into poverty. They want the state to regulate the cost of essential products and increase the minimum wage to CZK 18,200.
