Health Minister Roman Prymula said that at the present time the government has no plans for a lockdown such as are being effected in Israel or Madrid, but warned that if people fail to respect the restrictive measures announced, the government would have to tighten the reins, in order to curb the spread of the epidemic.

He said the measures would be revised in ten days, depending on the epidemiological situation.

The health minister is to present a plan outlining different scenarios and the different measures linked to them on Friday.

A month-long state of emergency came into force on midnight Sunday in response to the second wave of Covid-19 infections. The state of emergency, which gives the government greater powers, was declared so as to open the way for faster and more effective measures in the fight against the epidemic.

Secondary schools in high-risk areas will close for at least two weeks, indoor events are limited to ten people, outdoor events to twenty. Restaurants must place tables at a safe distance with a maximum of six diners at one table.

The state of emergency will allow ministries to acquire protective gear without an open competition and enable medical students to help out in hospitals due to the growing number of doctors and nurses who are Covid-19 positive or in quarantine.

The 1926 painting ‘La Dame de pique’ by Czech artist Toyen sold at auction in Prague on Sunday for a record 78.65 million crowns (about 3 million euros), including fees.

Toyen, whose real name was Marie Čermínová, joined the Czech avant-garde Devětsil group in 1923 and moved to Paris two years later. She experimented with cubism, surrealism and a style she called artificialism – a kind of poetic answer to cubism.

The previous record auction price for a Czech paining was set by Oskar Kokoschka’s ‘Prague - View from the Monastery of the Knights of the Cross with a Red Star’, which sold for 78.5 million crowns last October.

Barbora Krejčíková, the first Czech tennis player to reach round 16 of the ongoing French Open, lost to Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska on Sunday in three sets – 6-2, 2-6 and 3-6. A doubles specialist, it was her best result in a Grand Slam tournament.

Petra Kvitová, the world no.11, is now the only Czech left in the knockout stages. She faces China's Shuai Zhang (seeded no.39) on Monday for a place in the quarterfinals.

Two-time Wimbledon champion has won three of their five previous encounters. The Czech seeks her second quarterfinal-or-better showing at Roland Garros in her career. A win over Zhang would project her to return her to the Top 10 of the WTA singles rankings.

Health Minister Roman Prymula will present a long-term plan to combat the spread of Covid-19 on Friday (October 9) that will go into effect a week later, he said on Czech Television debate programme.

On Monday, a one-month State of Emergency comes into effect due to the second wave of Covid-19 infections. Secondary schools in high-risk areas will close for at least two weeks, while cultural and sporting events and other gatherings will be limited in size.

Prymula said about 60 measures are being considered within the long-term plan, from which the government will select in part according to their impact on the economy.

Experts from foreign universities have participated in the plan, which has been in preparation for two weeks, he said, declining to provide details in advance beyond saying school closures are under consideration.

As for the so-called traffic light system regarding risk-infection levels, Prymula said it would have to be readjusted because with the current parameters, the entire country would soon be ‘red’.

There were more voles this September than a year ago despite the extraordinary use of a rat poison environmentalists warned also endangers birds and other animals, including household pets, according to Central Inspection and Testing Institute of Agriculture (ÚKZÚZ) data.

Last month, ÚKZÚZ recorded an average of 1,059 active vole burrows per hectare of agricultural land – which includes fields, orchards, meadows and vineyards. In September 2019, the institute had found only 678 active burrows per hectare.

Last summer, the Ministry of Agriculture put a temporary ban on the blanket use of the Stutox II rat poison use after the Ministry of Environment warned of the threat it posed to wildlife. It later issued permits for its use where vole populations were five times the average size.

The Czech Ornithological Society warns that poisoned voles are easy but deadly prey for endangered Little Owls (Athene noctua), of which only some 100 pairs remain in this country.
