Czech film and theatre actor Martin Havelka has died at the age of 62, a spokesperson for Brno City Theatre, where he had performed since 1999, confirmed on Saturday. The cause of death has not yet been made public.
Havelka first appeared on screen in the 1979 film Ballad for a Bandit and went on to feature in several other films by director Jan Hřebejk. He also worked with the Goose on a String Theatre, the Brno National Theatre and the Brno City Theatre.

The Meteorological Office has issued a high wind warning for the whole of the Czech republic with the exception of Prague and West Bohemia. The warning is valid from Saturday until Sunday morning.for
Wind gusts of up to 110 kilometres per hour are expected to hit the Krkonoše, Jeseníky and Jizera mountains as well as part of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands.
The authorities have warned hikers to postpone planned trips and for people to secure their windowsand objects that could inflict injures.

The Czech economy experienced a fall of 10.9 percent in the second quarter of 2020, according to revised data released by the Czech Statistics Office on Friday. The statistic is the worst in the history of the independent Czech Republic and was primarily caused by the restrictive measures connected to the coronavirus pandemic.
Estimates predicted a year-on-year fall of 10.7 percent and a quarter-on-quarter of 8.4 percent.
According to experts, the quarter-on-quarter GDP is expected to increase again after most restrictions on economic activity have been lifted.

The annual ceremony honouring victims of the Holocaust at the former Terezín concentration camp in Central Bohemia has been cancelled, the spokesman of the Terezín Memorial Tomáš Rieger said on Friday.
The event, which traditionally takes place every year on the third Sunday of May, had been postponed until mid-October due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, in view of the current state of emergency, it has been called off.
Between 1940 and 1945, more than 150,000 people, mostly Jews, passed through the Terezín ghetto on their way to Nazi extermination camps; 117,000 of them did not live to see the end of the war.

Unemployment in the Czech Republic remained at 3.8 percent in September, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Jana Maláčová announced at a press conference on Friday.
Compared to the same month last year, the number of unemployed people dropped by around 2,000. The country’s labour offices registered over 277,000 job seekers last month.
Ms Maláčová said the Czech job market was in a good condition thanks to the Antivirus scheme supporting businesses hit by the coronavirus crisis, which was launched in mid-March.

The seventh Hackers Congress, a three-day event hosted by the Prague centre Paralení Polis, gets underway in Prague on Friday. The main focus of this year’s event is Digital Totality and the safety of data in on-line environments.
Guest speakers this year include US economist David Friedman, a leading proponent of anarcho-capitalism, and Riccardo Spagni, who was the lead maintainer of Monero, a privacy-centric cryptocurrency project.

The Premier League side West Ham have signed the Czech Republic’s defender Vladimír Coufal for a fee of around £5.5million. The 28-year-old right-back, who joins the club from Slavia Prague, has signed a three-year deal until the summer of 2023 with a two-year option.
The defender, who won two Czech titles since joining Slavia in 2018, has played in the Champions League and was a member of the Czech team that beat England last year. He will be joining his former Slavia and current national team colleague Tomáš Souček, who signed permanently to the London club at the end of July.

Voting began in elections to regional assemblies and one-third of the seats in the Czech Senate on Friday afternoon. Some people in quarantine for Covid-19 have already voted in special drive-in polling centres and with mobile electoral commissions.
However, the main voting began at 2 pm on Friday, with polling stations remaining open until 10 pm before again welcoming voters from 8 am to 2 pm on Saturday.
The Senate elections operate on a two-round system. If no candidate receives over 50 percent of the vote in the opening weekend, the two front-runners will enter a run-off in a week’s time.

Some 3,493 new cases of Covid-19 were registered in the Czech Republic on Thursday. This is a new one-day record rise in infections and brings the total number of active cases to 39,391. According to the latest data, there are 1,028 people in Czech hospitals with the coronavirus, with 198 of them in a critical condition.
Twelve deaths with Covid-19 were recorded on Thursday. There have been 678 since the start of the pandemic.
A raft of new measures aimed at containing the virus will take effect on Monday under a 30-day state of emergency.
