The Czech, Polish and Slovenian prime ministers have prepared a list of 10 steps that they say EU must take if it really wants to end the war in Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki made the announcement in a column on the website Politico on Friday.

Among the proposed measures are tougher sanctions against Russian banks, businesses linked to oligarchs and President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party, a halt to Russian propaganda in Europe, blocking transport between Russia and Europe and suspending visas for Russians.

The three prime ministers also propose banning the export of all European technologies that can be used for war purposes and excluding Russia from all international organisations.

The EU and the United States are convinced that the sanctions they have so far imposed on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine are working, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala told reporters in Brussels on Friday, the second day of the EC summit, adding that their impact on Moscow was not expected to be immediate.

Mr Fiala also said the European Commission was preparing another, already fifth package of sanctions, which would expand and refine the current measures.  Prior to the summit, some EU member states called for a significant tightening of the current measures against Russia, including an embargo on Russian gas and oil supplies to the EU.

The opposition’s claims that the government is forgetting about Czech citizens because of its aid to migrants is an attempt to turn Czech society against the refugees, Prime Minister Petr Fiala told journalists in Brussels on Friday, the second day of the European Council meeting. According to Mr. Fiala, by helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing the Russian invasion, the government is also indirectly helping Czech citizens.

When assessing the first 100 days of Mr. Fiala’s coalition cabinet, former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and leader of the opposition ANO party said the cabinet must not forget its own citizens over the aid to Ukrainians. He also said that Czechs were sinking into poverty due to the current government’s lack of action.
