Collectors and investors spent a record CZK 910.8 million crowns (including commissions) during the first six months of 2022, the Czech News Agency reported on Thursday, citing the editor-in-chief of art auction website Artplus, Jan Stuchlík. This is a year-on-year increase by 7 percent.

Mr Stuchlík said that the domestic auction market also saw collectors raising prices at auctions to the highest levels yet, with the threshold of CZK 100 million being paid for a single art piece being crossed for the first time ever. The piece in question was Bohumil Kubišta’s Staropražský motiv, which was sold in May for CZK 123.6 million, surpassing the previous record of CZK 90.24 million that was paid for František Kupka’s Divertimento II in 2020. According to the art magazine editor it is not only the luxury art market that is experiencing a boom, but also the lower and middle segments of the art auction market.

After three previous months of decline, industry in Czechia grew year-on-year by 3.3 percent in May, the Czech Statistics Office announced on Thursday. The construction sector grew by the same number in May, following a 4 percent decrease in the previous month.

The growth was largely thanks to an increase in automobile production, which grew by 9.8 percent when compared with the same month last year, and land construction, which grew by 3.5 percent when compared to the same period. Meanwhile, transport vehicle production saw a significant fall in May, down by 28 percent. According to the Czech Statistics Agency this sharp fall in statistics was largely due to a high comparative base. When it comes to international trade, Czechia saw a deficit of CZK 23.3 billion in May. The last time that the country's international trade was in surplus was in January.

When planning their holidays, Czechs are increasingly choosing active vacations, the Czech News Agency (ČTK) reports citing various companies active in the holiday business. Locations that offer cycling, hiking and rafting opportunities are among those most in demand.

For example, the director of web platform Slevomat, Ladislav Veselý, said that while active holidays made up between 15 to 18 percent of all of Slevomat’s sales before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, this year the company expects that it will be closer to 20 percent. The popularity of active holidays is especially popular among the younger generation of customers, he said.

The spokeswoman of travel agency Invia, Andrea Řezníčková, told ČTK that Czechs tend to plan active holidays on their own rather than through travel agencies. However, she did say that interest in active vacations organised by travel agencies grew during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic, when, for example, demand for cycling trips grew by 30 percent.

The main task of the Czech presidency of the Council of the European Union is to find consensus among member states in tackling the impacts of crises that the EU is currently facing, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said in a speech to the European Parliament on Wednesday, where he presented his vision for Czechia’s six month EU presidency.

Among the chief challenges faced by the union are inflation as well as the energy and food crises, Mr Fiala said, connecting them to the effects of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. He said that Russia is not just waging a conventional war, but also a hybrid war, using energy deliveries and refugee waves as a weapon. To tackle the impact of these crises on the EU, member states must agree on measures that will alleviate their effects on citizens, the Czech prime minister said.
