    The main prize at the Magnesia Litera awards for 2021 went to author and translator Martin Hilský’s publication Shakespeare's England - Portrait of an Age.

    Professor emeritus of English Literature, Martin Hilský is one of the country’s most prominent translators of Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets into Czech.

    His latest work has been hailed as a fascinating and extensively researched book that should give readers an even deeper understanding of Shakespeare’s work.

    In the jubilee 20th year of the annual book awards, it won among 463 registered titles.

    Poland is interested in reaching agreement with the Czech Republic regarding the Turów mine dispute, Polish officials said on Tuesday. The Czech Republic is suing Poland over the mine's expansion and recently refused to withdraw a lawsuit it filed at the EU Court of Justice over the matter. The court ordered Poland to halt opertions at the mine until a binding verdict was passed. Poland has refused to do so and is pushing for an out of court agreement.

    The Czech government on Monday tasked the environment and foreign ministers with negotiating an intergovernmental agreement with Poland. At the same time, it said Prague would ask the EU Court of Justice to impose a penalty of five million euros a day on Poland, for not respecting the court’s ruling.  Warsaw said Prague was entitled to such a move.

    President Miloš Zeman received the visiting Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya at Prague Castle on Tuesday expressing support for the Belarusian opposition and praising Tsikhanouskaya’s courage. Mr. Zeman said he wished the Belorussian opposition victory in the fight against the last European dictator.

    Ms.Tsikhanouskaya is also due to meet with Prime Minister Andrej Babiš before making an appearance at an evening concert in honour of the victims of persecution in Belarus.

    Ms.Tsikhanouskaya, who is here at the invitation of the Senate chair, addressed the upper chamber on Moday, calling on the Czech Republic to be consistent in its approach to what she referred to as the unlawful and terrorist regime of President Alexander Lukashenko.

    Foreigners without public health insurance in the Czech Republic will be able to start registering for a Covid vaccine at the end of this week, the Czech government decided on Monday.

    The exact date has yet to be clarified, since the system is currently being tested.

    They will get the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and the price should not exceed 850 crowns.

    It is not clear how many people this may concern. According to Interior Ministry statistics there were over 656,000 foreigners living in the country at the end of the first quarter. Over 344,000 of them have permanent residence in the Czech Republic.

    The Health Ministry has announced it will further reduce the price of antigen and PCR tests for self-payers. As of June 8, the price ceiling for a PCR test has been reduced to 814 crowns, down from the present 1,510 and that of an antigen test to 201 crowns, down from 351 crowns.

    At present each person with health insurance has two PCR tests and four antigen tests a month for free.

    Health Minister Adam Vojtěch said tests must be affordable since they would be required at services and cultural venues throughout the summer.

    Mandatory testing against Covid-19 in firms and state institutions will end at the end of June.

    Dominik Feri can return to TOP 09 if he clears his name following allegations of sexual impropriety, the chairwoman of the party, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, says. However, this could take several years, she said.

    Speaking on Czech Television, the TOP 09 chief said voters would appreciate the fact Mr. Feri had given up his seat in the Chamber of Deputies soon after a number of allegations against him emerged, adding that she did not think the matter would impact the party’s performance in elections in October, when they are running in the Together coalition with the Civic Democrats and the Christian Democrats.

    This year’s spring was the coolest in the Czech Republic since 1987 and the sixth coolest in this part of the world since the early 1960s, according to data from the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute.

    The average temperature in the spring between March 1 and May 31 was 6.2 degrees Celsius. That was 1.7 degrees below the norm, the forecasters said.

    From Tuesday it will no longer be compulsory for school children or teachers to wear face masks during lessons, with the exception of in three regions: Zlín, South Bohemia and Liberec.

    The government decided to end the requirement to wear masks in classrooms at a meeting on Monday, the minister of education, Robert Plaga, said. However, pupils and students will continue to have to cover their noses and mouths during breaks between classes.

    The Czech government has approved the basic parameters of next year’s state budget deficit, setting it at CZK 390 billion, the minister of finance, Alena Schillerová, told reporters on Monday.

    The minister said that the budget priorities for 2022 were savings on the state administration, including layoffs, investments of CZK 189 billion, an increase in the old-age pension, maintaining a lower income tax rate of 15 percent and raising the salaries of educators, police officers and soldiers and freezing the salaries of state employees.
