    The Czech Republic’s Lukáš Rohan has won the gold medal at the Canoe-Kayak Slalom World Cup in Prague’s Troja on Sunday.It is the first World Cup medal for the 26-year-old Czech, who finished 0. 24 seconds ahead David Florence of Great Britain.

    Another Czech, Tereza Fišerová, took bronze in the women’s C1 category. The 23-year-old finished behind Germany’s Andrea Herzog and the victorious Jessica Fox of Australia, who was the only one to perform a clear ride.

    The Czech Republic registered 74 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, which was the lowest increase for the day since July 11, suggest the Ministry of Health Data. On average, there were less than 14 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past seven days.

    The number of Covid-19 cases has been steadily decreasing since early March. Over 1.66 million people in the Czech Republic contracted the virus since the pandemic hit the country and 30,225 people died of Covid related complications.

    A US military convoy, which is heading from a NATO military exercise in Hungary back to Germany, will be crossing Czech territory in the coming days.

    The first part of the convoy, made up of close to 200 US military vehicles and 600 US soldiers, will arrive in the Czech Republic on Sunday evening and spend the night at a camp near the town of Jihlava. The rest of the convoy will enter the country on Monday and Tuesday.

    Since 2015, US soldiers have been regularly crossing the Czech Republic on their way to the Defender Europe exercise. The only exception was last year, when it was cancelled due to coronavirus.

    Czech Barbora Krejcikova claimed her maiden Grand Slam title after beating Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1 2-6 6-4 in the French Open final on Saturday.

    The 25 year-old doubles world number one has won the title on her fifth appearance in a Grand Slam singles draw. She has become the first Czech woman to lift the Suzanne Lenglen Cup since Hana Mandlíkova in 1981 and the third unseeded women's singles champion in French Open history.

    "It's hard to put into words. I cannot believe I have just won a Grand Slam," Krejčíková said after the match, paying a poignant tribute to her late coach Jana Novotná.

    "I spent a lot of time with Jana before she died. Her last words to me were 'enjoy tennis and try and win a Grand Slam'. I know she's looking after me. All this is pretty much because she is looking after me.“

    Krejčíková could also become the first woman to claim the singles and doubles titles in Paris since Mary Pierce in 2000, after reaching the doubles finals with her fellow Czech player Kateřina Siniaková. The Czechs, who already own two Grand Slam doubles titles, will play Iga Swiatek and Bethanie Mattek-Sands for the title on Sunday.

    Czech government will earmark around CZK one billion for humanitarian and development aid in 2022, the Czech News Agency reported on Saturday, citing Foreign Ministry sources.

    The sum, which includes finances from EU funds, is about one hundred million crowns less than the amount set aside for this year.

    Over CZK 300 million is to be used for bilateral aid in the so-called priority countries, which include Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova, Georgia, Ethiopia, Zambia and Cambodia. The Czech aid will also be channelled to Afghanistan and Ukraine.

    Over CZK 437 million are set aside for development projects coordinated by the Czech Development Agency.

    The Czech Republic’s Jiří Prskavec has won the opening race of the Canoe-Kayak Slalom World Cup being held in Prague’s Troja.. The 28-year-old Czech finished 0.45 seconds ahead of Italy’s Giovanni de Gennaro in the K1 men’s category.

    The other two Czechs in the race, Vít Přindiš and Vavřinec Hradilek, finished seventh and tenth, respectively. The World Cup event in Prague continues on Sunday.

    The country’s political leaders, including Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, Senate chairman Miloš Vystrčil and Culture Minister Lubomír Zaorálek, attended a ceremony commemorating the 76th anniversary of the razing of Lidice by the Nazis on Saturday.

    The old Lidice, a village north-west of Prague was one of two villages which were completely destroyed by German forces in reprisal for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the highest ranking Nazi official in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.

    On June 10th of 1942, all 173 men over 15 years of age were rounded up and shot, while the women and children were to concentration camps, where many died. The other village, Ležáky was razed to the ground in a similar manner a fortnight later.

    Friday saw 180 new cases of the coronavirus detected in the Czech Republic, the lowest week-day number since August 10, according to the Ministry of Health data. On average, there were 15 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past seven days.

    Nearly 110,000 people were inoculate with a Covid-19 vaccine on Friday. So far, over 6.4 million jabs have already been distributed in the Czech Republic with over two million of people having received the necessary two doses.

    The newly established European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) based in Luxembourg has taken over the case of Prime Minster Andrej Babiš’s conflict of interest, the news site iRozhlas.cz reported on Saturday.

    The independent office was launched on June 1 to take over all the more serious matters with an impact on the EU budget, on which the Public Prosecutor’s Office started working after November 2017. So far is has taken over 12 cases from the Czech Republic.

    According to a final audit by the European Commission, released in April, the Czech prime minister continues to influence the multi-billion crown corporation Agrofert he established, even after he was forced to place it into trust funds to meet a strict new conflict of interest law.
