The number of people permitted at outdoor arts events in the Czech Republic should rise to 5,000 from the start of July, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said in a weekly video address posted on social media. The number allowed at indoor culture events will rise to 2,000, under certain conditions aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19.
At present 2,000 people may attend open air events while the limit for indoor ones is 1,000. Inside venues may not be more than half full.

Following her sensational women’s singles win at tennis’s French Open, Barbora Krejčíková has climbed to 15 in the world rankings. It is the 25-year-old’s highest ever career placing. She is now the third highest ranked Czech, behind Karolína Plíšková and Petra Kvitová.
The Czech also won the doubles title at Roland Garros with compatriot Kateřina Siniaková and has returned to number one in the doubles rankings. It was the pair’s third Grand Slam triumph.

Almost 46,500 people died in the Czech Republic in the first quarter of 2021, the highest number of deaths seen in one three-month period since the establishment of the state in 1993. The death rate in the period from the start of January until the end of March was 54 percent higher than in the same period the previous year, according to official data released on Monday.
There have been a total of over 30,000 Covid deaths in the Czech Republic, one of the world’s worst per capita rates, and the start of 2021 saw particularly high numbers.

Czech Foreign Minister Jakub Kulhánek has congratulated incoming Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett after an alliance of parties survived a vote of confidence in the Israeli parliament on Sunday, officially ousting Benjamin Netanyahu from office.
Mr Kulánek described Israel as the Czech Republic’s closest ally in the Middle East, "with whom we share a rich history and deep friendship." The Czech diplomatic chief said he was looking forward to working with Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and hoped to welcome him in Prague soon.
Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has also expressed his congratulations on the formation of new Israeli government.

The Czech Republic registered 42 new cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, which is the lowest daily increase over nearly a year, suggest the Ministry of Health Data. On average, there were less than 13 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past seven days.
The number of new Covid-19 cases has been steadily decreasing since early March, when the daily increases reached nearly 17,000. Around 1.67 million people in the Czech Republic contracted the virus since the pandemic hit the country last March and 30,226 people died of Covid related complications.

Large foreign film and TV productions have started shooting in the Czech Republic again after a pause caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Czech News Agency reported on Sunday. Foreign film crews are attracted to the country by Czech film incentives.
One of the projects is the most expensive Netflix production The Gray Man, which is due to start shooting in Prague in July, the Czech Cinematography Fund wrote on its Facebook page. The espionage thriller, starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in the lead roles, is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.
Another Hollywood star currently filming in the Czech Republic is Adam Sandler, who will star in a Netflix adaptation of the novel Spaceman of Bohemia, written by Czech author Jaroslav Kalfař.

The Pfizer/BioNTech jabs could be available at pediatricians’ surgeries for children over the age of 12 in September, Health Minister Adam Vojtěch said on Sunday, adding that the ministry is currently selecting a distributor of the vaccine.
At the moment, the Health Ministry’s central registration system is open to everyone over the age of 16. The vaccination of children between the ages of 12 and 15 could be launched by late summer – ahead of the next school year. According to Mr Vojtěch, there are between 400, 000 to 500,000 people in this age bracket.
The use of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine against Covid-19 for children aged 12 and over was approved by the European Medicines Agency last month, while other brands are still undergoing testing.

Czech duo Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková have claimed their second French Open women's doubles title. In Sunday’s final, the No.2-seeded Czechs defeated No.14 seeds Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States and Iga Swiatek of Poland, 6-4, 6-2. It is the third Grand Slam women's doubles titles for the Czechs, who previously won in Paris and Wimbledon in 2018.
The win completes French Open’s dream run for Krejčíková, who defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for the women’s singles title on Saturday. The 25-year-old Czech has become the first player to sweep both the singles and women's doubles title at Roland Garros since Mary Pierce in 2000. The victory will also see Krejčíková return to WTA Doubles World No.1 on Monday.
