Anyone over the age of 12 can register to get vaccinated against Covid-19 as of Thursday, the same day Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó is in Prague to present a gift of 100,000 Pfizer/BioNTech doses to the Czech Republic.
The European Medicines Agency in May approved the use of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for children aged 12 and over while other brands are undergoing testing. An estimated 456,500 children aged 12 to 15 can now register for the jab, according to the Czech Statistical Office.
However, the Society of General Practitioners for Children is concerned that adults – especially those reluctant or unwilling to have themselves vaccinated – will not register their children.

The last 12 Czech soldiers stationed in Afghanistan as part of a NATO mission returned home on Sunday along with all equipment and supplies, the Czech Army has confirmed. NATO is due to withdraw entirely by September 11 at the latest.
Since 2002, in total more than 11,500 Czech soldiers served in the Allied mission to Afghanistan, mostly in field hospitals, as members of surveillance, chemical and biological protection units, or as part of surgical or reconstruction teams. Fourteen were killed or died while on duty there.
During a conference on security issues last week, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) said he was opposed to the withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan, echoing a statement by President Miloš Zeman. Foreign Minister Jakub Kulhánek (Social Democrats) has also questioned the move.

The newly released annual report of the National Centre against Organized Crime (NCOZ) shows an uptick in efforts by foreign criminal groups to obtain legal residency in the Czech Republic. Most are from Russian-speaking countries, it states, while applications in 2020 from Asian countries dropped.
Members of organized crime groups from abroad try to settle in the Czech Republic mainly through bogus marriages, unrealized university studies or fictitious employment, the NCOZ says. Others first acquire citizenship in another European Union state, such as Hungary or Romania.
Organized crime in the Czech Republic focuses on organising illegal migration and human trafficking, the NCOZ annual report states, most often of people with “socially disadvantaged backgrounds” who are exploited for their labour, including as prostitutes. The country is also used to launder money stemming from criminal enterprises in other countries.

Prague authorities cannot recover land in use by the Russian Embassy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, because the former Soviet Union received the right to use it in 1972 use free of charge and in perpetuity.
Amid growing tension in Czech-Russian relations, in late April the City Council of Prague 7 had demanded that the Russian Embassy vacate an area of 5,000 square metres that was part of Stromovka Park before being attached to the former Soviet Embassy premises after the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the only possibility for Prague 7 to reclaim the land is for the Russian state to sell it, since the agreement signed between the communist governments of that time is protected under international law. The mayor of Prague 7, Jan Čižinský, announced that he will continue to negotiate the issue.

After steadily declining for nearly three months, the number of new coronavirus infections is increasing again in the Czech Republic. For the first time since mid-April, the reproduction number is above 1, the Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday.
The seven-day incidence level has risen slightly, from 6.7 to 7.2 new infections per 100,000 population. A total of 160 new cases were registered on Tuesday, 48 more than a week ago. Just over a third of the cases were reported in Prague.
Meanwhile, although some 120 cases of the Delta variant of Covid-19 had been confirmed in the Czech Republic as of Tuesday, the so-called British variant is still dominant in this country.

The Czech authorities are recommending that fans of the national team not travel to Baku in Azerbaijan for a European Football Championship game in view of the Covid situation. The minister of health, Adam Vojtěch, said that people should watch the quarter-finals match against Denmark on their TVs at home.
The Czech Republic has placed Azerbaijan in its “very high risk” category as regards coronavirus risk, meaning that any fans who do travel will have to self-isolate on their return.

The Ministry of Health has issued a ban on people from the Czech Republic travelling from the country to Russia, from Thursday, and to Tunisia, from the start of next week. The move comes in response to concerns over the spread of new variants of the coronavirus.
Protective measures prohibit all citizens of the Czech Republic and foreigners resident in the country from entering states with an extreme risk of contracting Covid-19. As of Wednesday there are 14 countries on that list, including India and a number of African and South American states.
The travel ban does not apply to citizens of the states in question, or to journeys that cannot be postponed of which the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been notified in advance.
