President Miloš Zeman has criticized transgender people, women’s rights activists and the Me Too movement. In an interview on CNN Prima on Sunday the president said he could understand homosexuals, but he does not understand transgender people.
"If you undergo a sex-change operation you are basically committing a crime of self-harm," Zeman said, adding that he personally finds transgender people repulsive.
Zeman made the comments in response to a question about a dispute in the EU over a controversial Hungarian law banning LGBTQ references in school materials. Thirteen member states voiced grave concern over the law at an EU summit this week. The Czech Republic was one of the countries that refused to join in the criticism.

The environmental changes taking place were underestimated in the climatic models with which experts are working, Pavel Zahradníček from the CzechGlobe Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences told Czech Radio.
He said the current situation was projected to occur approximately in 2040. Over the last 60 years, temperatures in the Czech Republic have risen by an average 2 degrees Celsius. There are now twice as many summer days in which the temperature exceeds 25 degrees than half a century ago and the incidence of extreme events such as torrential rain, hailstones and gale force winds is increasing. According to climate models, the trend will continue.

The number of newly infected per 100,000 inhabitants remains below 10 in all regions with the exception of Prague where it is 17 to 100,000. Sixty people are currently hospitalized with Covid, of which 12 are in a serious condition. The slight increase in numbers is attributed to the Indian mutation which has been confirmed in seven regions.

One of the preconditions for a serious political dialogue with Russia would be the removal of the Czech Republic from the list of “unfriendly” countries, Foreign Minister Jakub Kulhánek said in an interview for the CTK news agency. The minister said relations with Russia should be pragmatic and based on mutual respect, but noted that a decision on their future direction would be up to the next government.
Czech-Russian relations are at freezing point after the Czech Republic expelled dozens of Russian diplomats from the country earlier this year, saying that Russian agents had been behind deadly explosions on Czech territory in 2014.

Clean-up work in the South Moravian region hit by a tornado on Thursday, continues for a third day now with hundreds of firemen, soldiers and police officers assisting in the effort. The worst affected of the seven villages hit are Hrušky, Moravská Nová Ves, Lužice and Mikulčice.
The local authorities have now opened the door to volunteers who have been streaming to the devastated area from around the country. However they have asked them not to bring any more material aid of which there is already enough, with the exception of work instruments, to park outside the village and maintain work safety and hygiene rules. Volunteers have also been asked not to call the local mayors who already have their hands full.

A commemorative gathering in Teplice for a Romany man who died last week shortly after being restrained by officers turned into a demonstration against the police, whom the local Roma community blames for the man’s death. Several hundred people chanted “Come and kill us” and marched to the local police headquarters. The police monitored the demonstration, but did not interfere.
The police have rejected responsibility for the man’s death saying that the force used by officers to restrain him was appropriate in view of the man’s attempts to struggle. An autopsy later found that the man had succumbed to a drug overdose. The family say they will demand a second, independent autopsy.
The incident has raised concern in view of the manner in which the man was restrained, with critics drawing a paralel to the death of George Floyd in the US. In a video shared widely on social media, a police officer is seen kneeling for minutes on the neck of the Romany man.
