Representatives of the Czechoslovak Legionary Association, the Czech Army and of several other institutions gathered at Prague’s Freedom Square on Friday to commemorate the 81 anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
The battle for the control of Britain’s skies in World War Two has a special place in Czech military history, because the Royal Air Force featured several Czechoslovak pilots and air crew service members within its ranks.
Deputy Defence Minister Vladimír Müller said at the event that the Battle of Britain “started the glory days of Czechoslovak fighter and bomber squadrons, who earned respect among their allies”. He added that the Czechoslovak pilots who fought in the RAF serve as an example for the current generation of pilots in the Czech Air Force.

Slovakia reopened all of its border crossings with the Czech Republic on Friday, Czech Television reports. However, unvaccinated visitors to the country are now obliged to undertake a 14 day quarantine upon entering the country, a response made by the Slovak government to the more infectious delta variant of the coronavirus.
Forced isolation is not compulsory only for certain professions, or for those traveling through the country. Cross-border workers with at least one vaccine dose also do not have to self-isolate.

The rate of unemployment in the Czech Republic improved in June, falling from May’s 3.9 percent to 3.7 percent, the Labour Office announced on Friday. The number of people looking for work decreased to 273,000 in June, while the number of jobs on offer rose to 355,000.
Statisticians believe that the main reason behind the fall in unemployment were an improving epidemiological situation and the lack of foreign workers. Several businesses that were hit hard by the pandemic have been able to restart and there has also been a rise in seasonal work offers in sectors such as construction, agriculture, hospitality and forestry.

People in the Czech Republic who are not vaccinated or have not had Covid-19 in the last six months must from Friday present their employers with a negative test after returning from abroad. Otherwise, under current regulations aimed at curbing the spread of the virus, employers may not allow them to enter their place of work if they have arrived from a state with a high Covid risk. If they have come from a low or mid risk country they can work wearing a respirator until they have had a test for the coronavirus.
Critics say employers should not be allowed to keep tabs on where their staff spend their holidays.
