Unemployment in the Czech Republic fell for the fourth month in succession to 3.7 percent in June, which is two tenths of a percentage point less than in May. The decline is attributed to the revitalization of the economy following the relaxation of measures against the spread of the coronavirus.

According to analysts the unemployment rate will not rise significantly and may continue to decline slightly in the coming months, unless the epidemic situation worsens and measures are tightened.

In the past year unemployment was held in check by the government‘s Antivirus program, through which the state contributed to employees’ wages, preventing massive lay-offs.

At their meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the prime ministers of the Visegrad group called for the greater integration of the Western Balkans into the EU, namely their inclusion in the Schengen zone. The Visegrad group, comprising the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, have long advocated such a move saying that it would improve stability and security on the continent.

The leaders of the Visegrad group also discussed the course of the coronavirus pandemic in connection with the spread of the Delta mutation in Europe, climate change issues and migration. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said that after the departure of NATO troops from Afghanistan Europe must prepare for the possibility of a new wave of migrants from that country.

Around 25 percent of coronavirus cases detected in the Czech Republic are of the delta variant and are particularly common among people returning from high-risk countries, Chief Hygienist Pavla Svrčinová told Czech Radio’s flagship station Radiožurnál on Friday.

People who are fully vaccinated, or had Covid in the past six months, must newly fill out a form upon returning to the Czech Republic from holidays . Meanwhile, those who do not fulfil the criteria are required to take a coronavirus test before they return to work.

Asked about whether the decision to enact these new measures was also influenced by people not turning up for a second coronavirus vaccine, Ms Svrčinová said this issue is less common in the Czech Republic than in some neighbouring states, with the majority of people turning up for their second dose.

The Chamber of Deputies passed a bill on Friday that would enable the state to cut benefits for citizens who have repeatedly failed to pay fines for minor crimes, such as offenses against public order, civil coexistence and property. Such funds would instead be diverted to local district budgets.

The legislation, proposed by the opposition Civic Democrats, is seen by some parties as controversial. Some MPs highlighted during the debate that it could be particularly damaging to the country’s Roma minority, while others said that such legislation would lead to an increase in minor crimes in poor neighbourhoods. However, an attempt by the Pirate Party to scrap the bill did not pass.

The bill will now be discussed in the Senate.

Close to 51,000 children have been signed up for a coronavirus vaccine since registrations opened for people between the ages of 12 to 15 last Friday, news site Novinky.cz reports. Hospitals are reporting a relatively high interest among parents who want to get their children vaccinated. Roughly 18,000 children have already received a date for their first vaccine dose and more than 4,700 have already received their first jab of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.

Parents who sign up their child for the vaccine are also required to accompany the minor to the vaccination centre and have to provide written confirmation that they agree to their child receiving the jab, although in some centres a verbal agreement is sufficient.

In total, 8.6 million vaccine doses have been injected since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The State Institute for Drug Control has received 6,305 reports of side effects, most commonly ranging from fevers, headaches and chills.
