Individuals newly registering for a coronavirus vaccine will have to wait just 21 days before they receive their second vaccine dose, Health Minister Adam Vojtěch told the Czech News Agency on Monday. Children, who have already been registered, will be able to change their second vaccine dose date to fit the new 21 day plan. However, adults who already have a second dose date planned, will not be able to change.

The decision comes after an earlier announcement by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, who said that the aim was to speed up inoculation as much as possible in view of the spread of the contagious Delta variant in Europe.

At present the second dose is most frequently administered after 34 days, previously it was in 38 to 42 days. Pfizer/BioNTech is the most common vaccine administered in the country.

More than a third of the population, about 3.8 million people, are now fully vaccinated, another 1.4 million people have received a single dose.

Spain has placed the majority of Czech regions on its list of high risk states for the spread of new mutations of the coronavirus. From Monday, people traveling to Spain will need to produce a PCR or antigen test that is not older than 48 hours, or a certificate of full vaccination against Covid-19. South Moravia has been exempted from the new requirements for the time being.

Covid-19 numbers have been rising particularly in Prague and Central Bohemia, mainly among young people who have not been vaccinated. The reproduction number has now jumped to 1.3, and is at its highest since the beginning of this year.

The activity of ticks in the Czech Republic has reached the highest level on a five point scale, severely increasing the danger of contracting Lyme disease or Tick Borne Encephalitis, the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Office warned on Sunday. It urged people engaging in outdoor tourism to protect themselves with tick repellents and proper clothing. Ticks should be removed as quickly as possible and any changes to the skin –such as a red ring forming around the bite – must be consulted with a doctor immediately.

The Czech Republic registered 159 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, which is 35 more than on the same day a week ago. The reproduction number has jumped to 1.35, at its highest since January 3.

The rise in cases, particularly in Prague and Central Bohemia, is attributed to the more contagious Indian variant of the virus, which is now spreading mainly among young people aged 15 to 29. So far it has not led to an increase in hospitalizations. There are currently 35 people hospitalized with the coronavirus, of which four are in a serious condition.

Officers say they know the young woman’s identity as well, but have not released any details on the case since both are aged under 18. Meanwhile conservationists are working to remove the graffiti, which they expect will take several days. The damage has been estimated at around 100,000 crowns.

Two walk-in vaccination centres will open in Prague on Monday, one in Prague’s main railway station, the other in the Chodov shopping mall. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said the centres, where people will be able to get a vaccine without needing to register, are part of a broader effort to encourage more people to get the jab and make inoculation more widely accessible. The prime minister stressed the importance of inoculating as many people as possible in connection with the spread of the more contagious Delta mutation in Europe.
