The ski season opened today in both the Krkonoše and Orlické Mountains, offering more than five kilometres of slopes — a wider selection than in recent years. Skiers are already on the runs in Špindlerův Mlýn, Černá hora in the Černá hora–Pec SkiResort, and the smaller Šerlišský Mlýn area. Most open slopes currently have over half a metre of mainly artificial snow. More resorts will join at the weekend, including Pec pod Sněžkou, Malá Úpa and Říčky, bringing the total to more than 16 kilometres of ski runs available across the region.

The Czech economy expanded by 2.8 percent year-on-year in the third quarter, according to updated figures released by the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ). It is the fastest growth since mid-2022 and slightly above the initial estimate. Quarter-on-quarter, GDP increased by 0.8 percent. Statisticians say both domestic and foreign demand supported the improvement, with household spending contributing the most. “The updated estimate confirms the continued growth of the Czech economy,” said Vladimír Kermiet, head of the national accounts department.

Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Tomio Okamura (SPD) has reversed his position on whether Parliament should send a delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. He confirmed the change to Novinky.cz, saying it was agreed by representatives of the emerging coalition.

The lower house will dispatch two lawmakers, as originally planned. One seat will go to career diplomat Karel Beran, elected on the Motorists' ticket. The second spot will be offered to the parties of the outgoing coalition.

The decision came following severe criticism from the as yet ruling parties who slammed the Chamber’s new leadership for blocking the foreign trips. Outgoing Prime Minister Petr Fiala described the decision as “disgraceful” and a gamble with national security. Lower house chief Tomio Okamura countered that the lower house would not serve as a “travel agency” as he claimed it had under the leadership of his predecessor Markéta Pekarová Adamová.

South Bohemian governor Martin Kuba is leaving the Civic Democratic Party and intends to found a new political movement. His departure ends weeks of speculation over whether he might challenge outgoing Transport Minister and party vice-chair Martin Kupka, for the top party post.

Kuba said his view of politics has diverged from that of the party leadership. He announced his decision on his Facebook account, adding that he has informed colleagues in the regional assembly and plans to continue serving as governor. He has been a strong critic of the party leadership under Prime Minister Petr Fiala.

In last autumn’s regional elections, the Civic Democrats scored more than 47 percent in South Bohemia, with Kuba emerging as the clear winner.

The Czech government’s spending on aid to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s invasion totals CZK 91.3 billion, outgoing Prime Minister Petr Fiala said after a cabinet meeting on Thursday.

Mr. Fiala also emphasizes that support for Ukraine has been financially sustainable while also highlighting the importance of justice, security, and solidarity with Ukraine. He expressed gratitude to everyone involved in providing aid since the conflict began in 2022.

Parties from the outgoing governing coalition have slammed the Organizing Committee of the lower house for rejecting a number of foreign trips tied to NATO and the European Union events. The decision, announced on Wednesday, means that Czechia will not send representatives to the Transatlantic Forum of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly next year. Outgoing Prime Minister Petr Fiala described the decision as disgraceful and a gamble with national security. Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský called the move unprecedented, warning that the Czech Republic is hurting its own interests.

The newly-elected Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Tomio Okamura countered that the lower house would not serve as a “travel agency,” as he claimed it had under the leadership of his predecessor Markéta Pekarová Adamová.

The parties of the outgoing coalition say they will call another extraordinary session of the lower house if Andrej Babiš fails to explain how he would handle his conflict of interest as a potential prime minister in a satisfactory manner. Outgoing Environment Minister Petr Hladík said that if Babiš “tries to wear everyone down with talk,” they are ready to convene another meeting, adding that resolving the conflict of interest is not a private matter but affects every Czech citizen.

Babiš has promised to provide an explanation to the public shortly before being appointed head of government, but has not indicated when that might be.

President Petr Pavel will meet the first three candidates for ministerial posts in the planned ANO–SPD–Motorists government on Friday. According to the presidential office, he will receive Robert Plaga, nominated by ANO to return as education minister, former health minister Adam Vojtěch, and Jeroným Tejc, the Motorists’ candidate for justice.

ANO leader and likely next prime minister, Andrej Babiš, presented the full list of nominees on Wednesday. Informal consultations with the president may continue until 10 December.

Pavel is ready to appoint Babiš as prime minister within a week after the proposed solution to his Agrofert conflict of interest and to name the cabinet shortly after. He has repeated his reservations about Filip Turek, the Motorists’ honorary president, citing legal concerns.
