Czech households expect to spend an average of 12,600 crowns on Christmas this year, similar to 2024, according to a survey by the Czech Banking Association and Ipsos. Most of the budget goes to gifts, typically between 5,000 and 10,000 crowns, while spending on food and drinks usually stays below 3,000 crowns. Only about two percent of people plan to take a Christmas loan, most often up to 5,000 crowns and usually from a bank. Although seven percent have borrowed for gifts at least once in the past, 95 percent of Czechs say taking a loan for Christmas presents is not a good idea.

President Petr Pavel told Czech Television that Filip Turek of the Motorists' party is not a suitable candidate for a ministerial role unless he clearly explains the controversies surrounding him. Pavel did not say whether he would appoint or reject Turek, who is nominated to lead the environment ministry in the planned government of ANO, the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party and the Motorists' party. Pavel noted that, while Turek is not facing charges and the presumption of innocence applies, higher standards apply to politicians. The Motorists maintain that Turek is legally beyond reproach and remains their nominee.

The supervisory board of the state-run Railway Administration has removed its director general Jiří Svoboda, Transport Minister Martin Kupka (Civic Democratic Party) announced. Police are investigating several of the company’s contracts worth billions of crowns and, as Czech Radio reported last week, found more than CZK 80 million in cash at Svoboda’s home. He has claimed the money came from the lifelong savings of his father and grandfather. The organisation is currently headed by his deputy Mojmír Nejezchleb, and Kupka said the case undermines public trust and that an independent audit of rail infrastructure projects is being prepared.

Tougher regulations for electronic cigarettes come into force today, tightening labelling, packaging and ingredient rules. Shops have seven months to sell existing stock. Nearly 14 percent of Czechs used e-cigarettes last year, almost triple the share five years ago, and one in four people aged 15 to 24 vapes. All products — including nicotine-free ones — must now carry health warnings and unified nicotine information. Their appearance may no longer resemble food, cosmetics or toys. The rules also ban plant oils, cannabinoids, psychoactive substances and most added sweeteners in refills. Health officials stress the high addictiveness of nicotine for young people.
