EU interior ministers have reached a political agreement to establish a solidarity fund for 2026 as part of the EU migration and asylum pact. Czechia will not have to contribute next year because of the high number of Ukrainian refugees with temporary protection in the country, the Czech EU representation said. Ministers also approved the Council’s position on two regulations designed to speed up asylum procedures for people not eligible for protection: the safe third country regulation and the safe country of origin regulation. The move allows talks with the European Parliament to begin. A common EU list of safe countries of origin is meant to accelerate the processing of unfounded asylum claims and reduce secondary movements within the bloc.

President Petr Pavel continues talks with ministerial nominees for the planned ANO, Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party and Motorists’ party government. This morning, Motorists’ nominee for culture minister Oto Klempíř arrived at Prague Castle; he will be followed by proposed sport, prevention and health minister Boris Šťastný. The most anticipated meeting will not take place, as controversial environment-minister nominee Filip Turek cancelled for health reasons. He says old back problems have returned, and party colleagues cite a herniated disc. Pavel has strong reservations about his appointment, pointing to racist and homophobic posts, disputed property disclosures and past threatening behaviour. The Motorists’ party still backs Turek.

Unemployment in Czechia remained one of the lowest in EU at 4.6 percent in November. The number of jobseekers rose only slightly—by about 800 people to roughly 341,000—while the number of vacancies fell by just over 3,000 to about 90,600. A year ago, unemployment stood at 3.9 percent, with around 200,000 people out of work. According to acting Labour Office director Karel Trpkoš, regional changes were minimal. The rate dipped slightly in Central Bohemia and Moravia-Silesia, edged up in South Bohemia, and stayed unchanged in the remaining 11 regions. Unemployment remained highest in the Ústí region at 6.9 percent and lowest in Prague at 3.5 percent.

Czech industrial production grew by 1.1 percent year-on-year in October, accelerating from a revised 0.8 percent in September. New orders also exceeded last year’s levels. However, output slipped by 0.1 percent compared to September, according to data published by the Czech Statistical Office. Growth was driven mainly by metalworking, machinery, and rubber and plastics manufacturing. Basic metals and foundries also expanded, while motor vehicle production dropped by 6.5 percent and mining by 14 percent. New orders rose nearly 3 percent year-on-year, fuelled chiefly by major long-term foreign contracts for other transport equipment. Employment in industry continued to decline, with the average number of workers down 1.4 percent.

Czech airline Smartwings is likely to be acquired by Turkey’s low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines after its parent company CSA entered a formal sale process, spokeswoman Vladimíra Dufková said. CSA owns 100 percent of Smartwings. The transaction would be completed once regulators and other bodies grant the necessary approvals, with the transfer of shares expected within the next 12 months. According to earlier media reports, Poland’s LOT had also shown interest in purchasing Smartwings.

Police early on Monday secured a house in Ostrava’s former miners’ colony Bedřiška scheduled for demolition. For days, activists had occupied its roof despite freezing weather to block the work, a protest that drew national attention. Demolition of the last house in the current phase has now begun. Opponents argue the colony is a rare example of successful community rebuilding and appealed for help to President Petr Pavel and the human rights commissioner. Local officials insist the structures are beyond their lifespan and too costly to repair, while residents say the Finnish-style houses could still be saved.

President Petr Pavel continues consultations with ministerial nominees for the planned ANO, Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) and Motorists' party government, but controversial environment-minister candidate Filip Turek cancels for health reasons. He cites recurring back problems, and party colleagues mention a herniated disc. Pavel has expressed strong reservations about appointing Turek, who faces criticism for racist and homophobic posts, disputed property disclosures and an alleged threat years ago to a Saudi embassy employee. The president today will meet only culture nominee Oto Klempíř and proposed sport, prevention and health minister Boris Šťastný.

The Office of the President announced on Sunday that the Motorists’ nominee for Environment Minister, Filip Turek, will not attend Monday’s meeting with President Petr Pavel due to health issues. The chairman of the Motorists, Petr Macinka, told CNN Prima News that Turek is suffering from spinal injury (slipped disc).
As a result, on Monday President Pavel will receive only two of the original three ministerial candidates at the Prague Castle: Oto Klempíř, the candidate for Minister of Culture, and Boris Šťastný, the nominee for Minister of Sport. Both candidates were nominated by the Motorists.

The historic town centre of Kutná Hora, together with St Barbara’s Church and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady in Sedlec, was officially added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on December 8, 1995. Since then, Kutná Hora has undergone extensive restoration - not only the most famous religious landmarks have been renewed, but also other important buildings in the town, including the Dačický House, the Sankturin House and the Vlašský dvůr (a former medieval mint and today’s town hall).
According to town officials, UNESCO status made it easier to push through investment in repairs and secure funding for them. The current mayor, Lukáš Seifert (ODS), believes that over the past three decades Kutná Hora has transformed from a neglected town into one of the jewels of the Czech Republic, drawing visitors from around the world.

According to their chairman, Petr Macinka, the Motorists’ party is not looking for even a temporary replacement for its MP Filip Turek, despite President Petr Pavel suggesting that Turek’s appointment as minister is unlikely. Speaking to CNN Prima News, Macinka dismissed suggestions that another cabinet member might have to run the environment ministry. He also ruled out the idea that insisting on Turek’s nomination could jeopardise the formation of the planned government with ANO and SPD.
