A record number of photographers have entered this year’s Czech Press Photo contest, the Czech News Agency reported. The jury reviewed 5,250 images from nearly 300 authors and announced nominations across nine categories. This year lacked a single dominant theme: photographers turned their lenses toward anti-government protests in Georgia and Serbia, a benzene train accident in Czechia, the wind-down of coal mining and campaigning in October’s general elections. The results of the competition will be announced in January of next year.

The outgoing cabinet of Prime Minister Petr Fiala is due to meet for its final session on Wednesday. It is due to debate proposed amendments to the Budget Responsibility Act—proposing that future spending limits follow the EU’s net-expenditure rule rather than structural-deficit ceilings as well as a new national vaccination strategy. Next Monday, President Petr Pavel will appoint ministers from the new coalition government of ANO, SPD and the Motorists’ party led by incoming Prime Minister Andrej Babiš .
With the cabinet in place, Babiš will be able to attend the European Council meeting scheduled for 18–19 December. Before Christmas, he also plans to convene two cabinet sessions. The incoming government has said it will draft its own budget, as the coalition parties are dissatisfied with the version submitted by the outgoing administration of Prime Minister Petr Fiala (Civic Democrats).

The Czech Pirate Party has appealed to the European Commission over what it calls a glaring conflict of interest involving newly appointed Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO). The party is seeking clarity on whether Babiš’ Agrofert holding can continue drawing EU subsidies without breaching European rules. Party leader Zdeněk Hřib said Babiš’ proposed solution raises more questions than it answers.
Last week, Babiš announced that his Agrofert shares would be placed under a trust structure managed by an independent trustee and overseen by an independent protector. Hřib argues that the very essence of a blind trust is ignorance of its contents — a condition he says is not met here. Babiš knows Agrofert’s portfolio intimately, knows its managers by name, and knows exactly what his children stand to inherit. As prime minister, he will be able to shape laws and rules that directly benefit Agrofert and other companies tied to him,” Hřib warned.

Andrej Babiš on Tuesday delivered to President Petr Pavel his proposed list of ministers for the new ANO–SPD–Motorists government. The original nominee for the environment ministry portfolio Filip Turek is missing from the list for health reasons. Babiš has proposed that the Environment Ministry be temporarily headed by the Motorists' chair and future foreign minister Petr Macinka.
Turek’s nomination has been questioned over the fact that he allegedly posted racist, sexist, and homophobic statements on social media. President Pavel said earlier that the chances of him being appointed to any ministerial post were slim.

Students in Prague and several other Czech cities held protests on Tuesday against the prospect of the Motorists’ party heading the Ministry of Environment. Environmental groups claim that leaving the environment portfolio in the hands of a Motorists’ representative would jeopardize public health and dismantle nature protection efforts. The protests were organized by Czech representatives of the Universities for Climate movement. The Motorists received the environment ministry portfolio under a coalition deal agreed on by the three parties of the emerging government. They are vehemently opposed to the Green Deal.

The Czech Constitutional Court has rejected a complaint filed by the Russian State Property Management Enterprise, which objected to being placed on the national sanctions list. The company manages numerous Russian-owned buildings in Czechia, and the listing resulted in frozen bank accounts and dozens of immobilised properties. The complaint targeted rulings by the Supreme Administrative Court and the Prague Municipal Court, as well as government decisions from late 2023 and early 2024. The Constitutional Court found the case manifestly unfounded, noting the complainant merely repeated arguments already dismissed by lower courts. The government listed the enterprise due to suspicions it provides material and financial support to the Russian state.

Slavia Prague will try to revive their hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout stage when they face favourites Tottenham in London on Tuesday. Still without a win in the competition, they have three points from three draws with three games left in the league phase. Slavia sit 31st out of 36 teams and must take points in London to stay in contention before closing matches against Barcelona and Pafos.
