The Mountain Rescue Service is advising against ridge hikes in the Krkonoše (Giant) Mountains due to strong winds, drifting snow and poor visibility. Gusts on the ridges are exceeding 50 kilometres per hour, with fog reducing visibility to near zero in places. Conditions have also forced the upper section of the cable car to Sněžka to remain out of service, while the lower section is operating. Temperatures on the peaks have dropped well below minus ten degrees Celsius, with wind chill making it feel far colder. Avalanche danger remains at the lowest level, but snowdrifts are complicating movement in exposed areas.

Drivers in northern Czechia should still expect difficult conditions as snow, ice and strong winds continue to affect roads across the country. In the Liberec and Ústí nad Labem regions, roads are passable only with caution, with new or compacted snow, icy patches and drifting snow reported. Morning temperatures range between minus seven and minus four degrees Celsius, falling to around minus ten in the mountains. Meteorologists warn that strong winds may significantly lower perceived temperatures and locally create snowdrifts, especially at higher elevations. Some mountain routes remain closed to heavy trucks, while similar winter conditions are complicating driving in other regions of Czechia as well.

Trade unions are sticking to their demands from last year for higher public-sector wages in 2026. They want a nine percent rise in pay tariffs for lower-paid professions and the civil service, and a six percent increase for doctors, nurses and social service workers, effective from January. Josef Středula, head of the Czech-Moravian Confederation of Trade Unions, told Czech Press Agency (ČTK) ahead of Monday’s talks with the government. The previous cabinet approved January pay rises for teachers, teaching assistants and security forces, but left other professions unresolved. The new coalition government of ANO, the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party and the Motorists' party is expected to discuss its draft budget later this month, with union talks continuing after Monday’s tripartite meeting.

Member of Parliament Filip Turek of the Motorists' party said he will file a lawsuit for protection of personality rights against President Petr Pavel, seeking an apology over the president’s refusal to appoint him environment minister. Turek said Pavel’s reasoning had deeply offended him and again ruled out a competence lawsuit by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. In a letter to Babiš, Pavel said he must protect fundamental constitutional values, including rejection of totalitarian ideologies, arguing that Turek’s past statements and conduct cast doubt on his loyalty to those values, including remarks that praised or downplayed Nazi Germany.

The biggest Czech online retailer Alza more than doubled its net profit in 2024 to Kč2.3 billion, while revenue rose by a third to Kč61 billion, according to the company’s annual report. Founder Aleš Zavoral said the results reflected a strategic shift toward profitability rather than aggressive revenue growth. Alza reported higher costs for labour, advertising and rents, alongside stronger competition, including from Chinese firms. Despite this, the company expanded its network of delivery lockers, opened new stores abroad and recorded growing sales beyond electronics, including cosmetics, pet supplies and over-the-counter medicines.
